mac upgrade advice 10.1 imac on 10.6.8

ok, I want to get this imac running OS X 10.6.8 model 10.1 to high sierra (I believe the highest it'll go) do I have to purchase lion and then snow leopard?

I believe you are going to need to upgrade to ElCapitan first.

It is free if you can access it via the app store but youll need a Mac that lets you download it.

You may be better off getting a copy off ebay.

Upgrades from Snow Leopard (10.6) are free and available from the App Store.
