As a sister thread to http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/201922-word-ipad.html which has become a bit lengthy now to add this slightly seperate (but related issue).

My Headteacher wants the Word app on an iPad (pro 2018 12.9") to get this I need an A3 or above O365 subscription (we are entitled to this for 'free' as we have Office Pro Plus).

However, the basic O365 setup comes with O365 A5 trial licenses, so I downloaded the app and got my Headteacher to sign in... It does, but tells him he cannot edit.

I am still struggling to make any headway with my reseller to get O365 added to my OVS and I thought this was the problem, but....

After speaking to Microsoft (who said he should be able to create/edit based on the fact that our O365 has the trial A5 licenses), I did some troubleshooting.

In the O365 Admin Portal, I blocked his sign in... He can still sign in...

I'm guessing that something isn't connecting/communicating (which makes sense as the Admin Portal didn't acknowledge that he had the app on his iPad and had signed in when I tried it originally). I will admit now, I know practically nothing about O365 and I did skip some of the set-up as I couldn't see how they were relevant to what I need.

I do have a Domain and have verified it, but didn't do the other parts which seem to be related to Exchange/Skype/Mobile Management (none of which I'm interested in) and also didn't add our website (as it is not on the Domain I am using for this) or add in any credit card details.

Now, I have 2 lines of thought so far:

Firstly, is something in our filtering stopping the communication?

Secondly, I'm a bit confused about the method O365 uses to communicate with the Word app on the iPad. Hopefully it is somehow purely the fact that he is signing in and not something to do with the fact that I havent done anything with DNS at our registrar, because we are not using those services.

2nd that, the free version for schools is A1 plus (the plus means you can have the office installers) This will work with the ipad store apps, just login with the correct credentials. Apply the A1 Plus for faculty to the headteacher and you should be set. as long as your schools has an .sch.uk or an .org address it'll automatically accepted as an educational institution. Otherwise you'll have to get hold of M$.

I dont think any of the dns records would affect it but not 100% sure. How long did you disable his account for before trying a login as it may take a little bit to apply?

I suspect that because the app is an office app it directly queries the office/ms urls rather than needing to discover like 3rd party apps for login etc.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm sure I'm missing something here but I'm licensed for 'Office 365 A1 Plus for faculty' and can use Word for iPad without issue.

Well, it may be a little premature as technically we are not licensed for anything until I can get my reseller to put it on to our OVS agreement. Can I just enquire as to whether your iPads are > 10.1" ? Also, as I spoke to MS and they said that even though we do not have anything through our agreement, it should still be working as it came with A5 faculty trial licenses.

We have a .sch.uk address and I've registered that domain within O365, the headteacher logs in as the user that is showing on the portal. He is also showing as having one of the A5 licences applied to his account. I'm sorry but I do not see anywhere to 'apply' licenses. Do you mean add subscription? If so, when I go to that page it tells me I don't have permission, then crashes into an error page.

Well, admittedly I didn't leave it for very long (maybe 60 minutes) but only because the portal says it will stop the log in immediately or if they are logged in will log them out after an hour.

Yeah that should have been enough.

Sync with Azure AD Connect will regularly break - it has to be updated pretty often to keep working. Have a look in the event logs on the server that hosts it. Generally, as soon as I notice any issues (such as passwords not being synced) the first thing I do is update AADC (manually). When did you last do it?

It's not instant. You can disable an account and it can take hours before it syncs with a device a Microsoft App has been installed on. We had to block a user from being able to send/recieve emails on their iPhone but it took up to 12hours for it to come in to affect as that seems to be just the way it works with Microsoft Apps on devices like iPhones etc.

Thanks again to all....

I don't think syncing or Azure AD is part of the problem (we are not using it that I know of), this is purely in the user section of the O365 admin web portal (I should have admin rights here as I set it all up).

It may well have taken longer than an hour to block the log in... but now I suspect there is no communication at all.

I have just had an hour long phone conversation with our reseller and a license was added to our O365. It was visible in the admin portal and assigned to the user.

However, after signing in to the Word app on the iPad... Nothing... Still the same message about not being able to edit... get an 0365 subscription... blah, blah, blah!

Is there a chance he's signed up to and logged in with a Microsoft account rather than the Office365 account.

Before we used O365 for emails I had signed up for a Microsoft account for volume licensing amongst other things using my work email address. I now get the question is this a personal account or an work/school account each time I sign in unless it's directly O365 related.

Yes, I understand the confusion! We have a council Learning Platform which is based on O365 and I get asked the same question all the time.

It was made worse by the fact that I had signed up to the 'Microsoft' account (for VLSC) using the same school email address as the Learning Platform (as that is my work email address). Now, when it asks if it is a personal or work account it's a bit weird as they are the same (but different)... Doesn't even make a lot of sense to me now I'm typing it out...

However as for your original question - he is using the O365 account that I made for him in the O365 admin portal with the .sch.uk domain I used, so it cannot be mistaking which account is being used (also he never uses his Learning Platform email/Microsoft/'other' O365 account).

Well, you couldn't make it up....

So to rule out filtering issues, I asked him if he could sign on to his O365 account on the iPad at home last night (bearing in mind I've been running myself into the ground for the last two weeks, stressing out and trying to get this 'URGENT' matter resolved)... A 10 second job, right?

Answer this morning...? He didn't have time...

You think I would have learnt by now not to care so much!

3..... more...... days.....

Well, after all that my troubleshooting identified that it appears to be our network, as I could log on at home (in my lunch break)…

I managed to isolate two URLs that were being blocked on the school network (both in the catagory of web mail):

ht tps :/ / ocws.officeapps.live .c om

ht tps: / /ols.officea pps.live .c om

I have allowed these through the webscreen filter and am now able to sign on at school!

There may be others URLs that I am not aware of as I still cannot see the device in:

View and manage which devices this person has Office apps installed on.

But I am happy for now!

Also, I am still working with our reseller to provide ‘proper’ licenses on our OVS account in VLSC and hoping that the transfer into O365 will go smoothly…

Fingers crossed!
