Koldov Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 After our Head insisted on a Mac we had to get a version of MS Office to put on it (I believe this was covered by our MS licensing agreement). Now we have had to purchase an new iPad Pro for him and he also wants MS Word on it. However, I'm confused by the licensing model as I have Googled for the app and it appears that although you can download and install the app for free, it will only let you open original documents (not create). It would seem that we will also need to have an O365 subscription (which I'm not sure will be covered by our MS licensing). Can anyone please explain?
atcoates Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 Yes I think you're correct you can open and read docs but without an office 365 subscription etc you can't create and edit. 1
chazzy2501 Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 yeap, you need o365 license to fully use the apps. if you're a school, (with or without an ees agreement) I believe you can apply for an office 365 tenant. You'd really want this setup before you start issuing credentials though. (like setting up your schools domain name, so no an "onmicrosoft.school.o365.com" address. it's been ages since I applied. You used to have to have an agreement but not anymore, I think you don't even need to manage it if you don't wish (I know nothing about this route though) 1
atcoates Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 If it's just for one user setting up a whole office 365 tenancy would be a bit overkill. Are there any other options for an individual subscription outside of o365?
Koldov Posted December 3, 2018 Author Posted December 3, 2018 That seems like a massive pain to get one Word app on one iPad...

Joanne Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 Will pages app not suffice? Just download the Word app and see if he ever opens it!
Koldov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 (edited) AAAAAAAGH! Why is it so complicated?! So, even though we have a license agreement to cover Microsoft Office, we also have to have an O365 account to put Word on an iPad... I have gone through everything I need to do in order to create the free O365 tenant for my school and added the Headteacher as a user. He has downloaded the Word app on his iPad pro from the app store, but when he signs in to the O365 account I made for him it tells him that he doesn't have permission to create documents. It also doesn't show in the O365 Admin Center that he has installed it on any device... Can anyone please tell me why? Edited December 4, 2018 by Koldov
Norphy Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 It's not enough that you have an Office 365 tenancy, you also need to have an Office 365 ProPlus license inside Office 365 and then you need to assign that license to him As far as I know, as long as you have an EES license of some description, you should be entitled to the O365 ProPlus license too. You may need to request it from your MS reseller. 1
Koldov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 This is tucked away in the settings for the user, I turned everything else off but left this enabled - is this not it?
Katy Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 This is tucked away in the settings for the user, I turned everything else off but left this enabled - is this not it? As far as I'm aware you don't need ProPlus for this (as that's for licensing the desktop version), however you will need Onedrive and Office Online turned on - Word etc on ipads is designed to be used as part of Office 365 with everything saving to the OneDrive (although it will allow local storage access too).
Koldov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 (edited) Hold on.... Am I being incredibly stupid/naive/gullible....? O365 free for schools.... This is not a trial! Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools! Free for your entire school! All you need to get started is to enter a valid school email address! Sign-up your school here... Woohoo! Oh wait have you got a Domain....? No, tough luck! Yes? Oh can you prove it? All done.... Actually states it's a 30 day trial..... The rest is not really free....? Well yes the WEB versions are.... That anyone can get with a freakin Hotmail account.... But, at least it DOES state that I have a trial of (25) A5 licenses so what's the point of a trial if I can't use the software...? Edited December 4, 2018 by Koldov
Koldov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 A1 is free, A5 is expensive. Hmmm... so I see... Well, I certainly don't need A5.... but I'm guessing I can't actually get the Word app to work on an iPad with A1 because it's just the free web apps anyone can get with a Hotmail/Outlook account?! Not sure why I'm bothering to jump through all these hoops to get A1. So O365 help emailed me back asking me "- Does the headteacher Office 365 account has a assigned license to it?"

Katy Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 I was under the impression that the free ipad apps count as the online version, does it work on the ipad if you turn on "Office Online" and Onedrive (might be called Sharepoint in the list), and turn off Pro Plus? If it does work without proplus turned on then it'll work on the A1 plan.
Mayki5 Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 If the iOS device has a screen size of 10.1" or greater, it requires E3/A3 or above licence. Any smaller devices are ok with the E1/A1 licence.

Nice of MS to make it simple....! (All our ipads are smaller than 10.1" which is why I thought A1 was good for it.)

It's true.... https://support.office.com/en-us/article/what-you-can-do-in-the-office-apps-on-an-android-ios-or-windows-mobile-device-with-an-office-365-subscription-9ef8b63a-05fd-4f9c-bac5-29da046833ea I've got to say I really do like IT as a job, but this part (licensing) absolutely kills it for me.... Oh, that and managing iPads in general...
Koldov Posted December 4, 2018 Author Posted December 4, 2018 I think we were trying to go for an app on the iPad with local storage as it's wi-fi (not 4g) and he uses it for the work he does in other schools. It may not always be possible to have it connected to a network (or he will be using it whilst away from a network/commuting to and from). I presume these web apps using the A1 plan and OneDrive need to be connected to work?

Seems mad that you can install the full version on high performance massive screened desktop devices, but not mobile ones. I presume the reason that you never hear of people being audited for M$ licencing is that it's so complicated that 1) no one in Microsoft understand what you're actually supposed to have and 2) it'd never stand up in court because you could say your tried your best and there's no way that any normal person could be expected to understand it

If you have Pro Plus on OVS it would only count if your OVS is linked to Office 365, and you've assigned the licence that way. 1

If you are licensed for 'Office Professional Plus' (which is a desktop version) with a Volume License such as OVS, you are not licensed to use an Office 365 version of the 'app'. what the actual difference is, who knows...? You can always use the 'free' A1 version but you cannot install that on a device with a screen larger than 10.1" - for that you must have O365 licenses on an A3 plan or higher, sometimes but not always, depending on the O365 plan you have (of which it appears there are many). Koldov Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 (edited) These are non qualifying plans: So it appears if you have an OVS licensed version of Office Professional Plus, you cannot use Office apps on an iPad as they need to be O365 licensed versions of Office... Yes, I would truly like to watch an MS representitive stand up in court and explain their licensing to a judge... Edited December 7, 2018 by Koldov
