Hi all

 

I can see a thread on this already, but from a few years ago.

 

I'm wondering if anyone has any strong recommendations for a home UPS? I'm looking for something for an HP microserver. Not looking for any great runtime, but one that can initiate a graceful shutdown after 5 mins or so of outage. Something reasonably compact/discreet, too, as it's not going to be in the hall.

Hi I like APC ups but check the model you are after is compatible with your is Richard

Bought a second hand APC 1500 off ebay about 2 years ago, as long as you get the UPS devices that have field placeable batteries and trust the unit is not a dud, even better if it comes with some form of warranty. Collection might be an option as then you can see unit first hand and test etc.

 

Reading your post I see it is a MicroServer. A APC 1500 may be overkill, a 750 or just smaller may be better. Things get a bit more complicated if you are running VMWare ESXi like me but otherwise you should be able to use a USB cable attached to the MicroServer and run PowerChute on the server.

I like this line: https://www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-400-230V-BS1363/P-BE400-UK I use them on a few outlying systems and they work well. They're not connected via USB in my cases as it's to things like NASs and CCTV; you need the 550 or 700 models for that.

The Back-UPS 325 was the sort of size I was hoping for. Given that it appears I'd have to go quite a bit bigger to get an APC that'll run the shutdown software, I'm thinking that something could be scripted that'll initiate a shutdown after a couple of minutes of the ethernet going down, and not rely on UPS features to do it.
