atcoates Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 We have regular clear outs at my sites. We get everything recycled via prm greentech so nothing goes in a bin (well not ours anyway!). It's a bit easier to get rid off stuff if you think it may get another use one day.

Ooooh what model? They can be made to run a surprisingly late version of OS X if coaxed, and they're easy to upgrade. Still got a soft spot for them.

southhamster Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Had a collection yesterday' of a load of scrap kit by ORM Green. The last of our Fujitsu Esprimos have gone. They were 10 years old but even though only SATA 1 were just about usable with SSDs.

Still got a soft spot for them. 10.4.11 if I remember rightly. Usable for very basic computing. I have one as a museum piece!

With a bit of tinkering (and addition of additional venting in it using a dremmel), you can put a decent Mini ATX/ITX board in there. It's always a fun project and with a couple of LED strips, that could look incredible!

I did have 100Mb LAN with a fat university JANET connection at the end though, so my ping was usually about 8ms (got called a hacker so often for that one).

Trying to fire in front of someone to where you think they will be as they warped across the map... Then getting shot or worse knifed before you even saw the other player appear... I would say I wasted so much time, money and energy on that game (literally a couple of years of my life every evening and weekend with clan matches and practises). Honestly, that's the main reason I ever got into tinkering with computers in the first place, as that's what drove every upgrade (thinking it would make me a better player). Still, in the end it's the reason I'm sitting here now I guess... A few other finds.... Every TV box I've had for the past 15 years going back to NTL & every cable modem and router (I actually chucked the last Tivo box, but ripped the hard drive out of course). Lotus Smart Suite on a bazillion floppy disks! A couple of Video cameras and an old Polaroid camera. Boxes and boxes of speakers, keyboards, mice, webcams, power supplies and various cables. Hundreds of assorted CDs/DVDs (which I am going to have to look through before I chuck them just in case) and floppy disks. A few guitars and basses (and multi effects pedals) that I didn't have room for in my studio (spare bedroom ). A Speedlink Medusa 5.1 surround headset - another upgrade I thought would make me a better gamer (it didn't)... Playstation 1 (chipped) & 2 and various games (and a Wii plus games). Had to laugh at a few 'finds' though. My Mrs. wanted a DVD player last year and went out and bought one... Turns out I had one in the loft I'd forgotton about (along with a VHS tape player)! However, it unfortunately looks like my Commadore 64 (plus cassette/games/input magazines) wasn't wrapped well enough and has suffered some moisture ingress and complete disolouration of the plastic (looking a very odd dark shade of brown now)... Well, I guess it has been about 35 years.... Hopefully I will resist the urge to either get some of it up and working or open a museum and feel much better when it all gets recycled... Well, I guess it has been about 35 years.... I'm now collecting machines like that, and a little moisture won't hurt it. A few new capacitors, a couple of heatsinks and a day in the sunshine/under a UV lamp coated in 40% hydrogen peroxide will sort that all out! I have my C64 looking like new currently and looking to modify it somewhat (giving it stereo sound, loading games from SD card etc) Got a C64 (breadbin style and the newer C64C), Atari 800XL, Woody 2600, Atari ST. Looking for an Amiga at the mo! 2
