Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

 

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

20 games seems a bit low (though im struggling to think of 5 i want tbh), why not a dual shock with analogue sticks (but again if they cherry pick games that dont need analogue then id imagine the older controller is cheaper to make. again whats with the no psu? i assume its usb powered so a lot of people will just plug into their tv

wonder if ff7 will be the actual ps1 ff7 or more like the ps4 version with some qol improvements (not that ive played the ps4 version)

 

tbh id rather have a dreamcast mini and realistically ps1/dreamcast/n64 era console games are going to look terrible on a modern big screen

PS2 and PS3 play PS1 games, and they're still firmly attached to my TV! Not sure this is far enough removed from the living room to make a comeback, unlike the NES and SNES. Maybe it'll work, but I paid peanuts for my little PSOne which is pretty compact already, and that has a CD drive.

I can’t think of a single one of my friends that had an unchipped PlayStation to be quite honest!

 

Remember when we went round at Christmas and played a dodgy copy of Resident Evil 3...only for it to lock up and corrupt my friends save around 90% complete!

 

I used to love buying the magazines that came with the demo discs each month!

It's good Wild Arms is on there (it was brilliant), but what about things like Legend of Dragoon? Tony Hawk's? Omega Boost? Star Ocean? Suikoden?

 

What about some of the big games that were never released on these shores? Ogre Battle? Brigandine? Vanguard Bandits? Thousand Arms? Xenogears? Dragon Quest? Chrono Trigger? The earlier Persona games?

 

I also think only putting 20 games on there could probably be upped somewhat in todays' world.

of that list never played/heard of,see above,think ive played and own on steam,never played,never played, meh, never played, nope(dont do horror games i just dont get it at all), never played, never played, old tomb raider sucks, never played

 

i doubt you will get more than 1 game per franchise so as its getting ff7 id forget about 8/9. literally the only game i can remember enjoying on ps1 that i cant get on ps4/3/vita/steam already are ridge racer and gran turismo and im going to go oujt on a limb and say they wont of aged well will look awful on a modern tv esp just based on screen size and probably could really do with the analogue sticks. With the crash/spyro remakes i doubt they will be on the mini and the further you go away from 1st party sony titles the harder the licensing will be

I do recall hearing something like that.. I heard that the re-release on Steam was pretty much the original PC port with a few tweaks because of it. I know 100% they lost a lot of files like backgrounds and stuff which is why they couldn't upscale them.

Mate you need to try MediEvil if you can. Whilst the graphics don't stack up so great today, the games, especially the first, are still very fun.

And you play as a skeleton who, if reduced to having no weapons, rips off one of his arms and hits things with that. What's not to love?!

Yeah tbh I agree with that. I doubt many, if any, of the games I listed will make it onto the mini.. Especially not the ones that have been remastered. They were just games off the top of my head I'd be up for revisiting.

Quite disappointed by the list of games on the Playstation classic. Missing lots of the best titles on the system IMO

No Wipeout, tomb raider, castlevania, gran turismo, Tony hawk's, etc. It's not awful but it could be better..... And some of the games on it are just filler really(qube, Mr driller, cool boarders, destruction Derby). I'm aware several of those omissions are likely due to licensing issues so perhaps not Sony's fault.

Licensing some of those games now would take a serious amount of time and money - Wipeout's soundtrack alone would add cost! Few surprises in there, and no surprise that there's a few Sony/Psygnosis first party titles as they're much easier to licence. Tekken 3 is still ace, and getting GTA is interesting as it hits age rating categories.

Part of the charm of the PS1 (I still have my original) is the sound and feel of those massive, wobbly power and eject buttons on the console. Pressing them was such a joy, since the PS1 was connected to the only TV we had in the house: being allowed to press the power button and hear the boot animation meant I was finally being allowed to play V-Rally/Colin McRae Rally/Gran Turismo/Tekken 3/THPS2 again!

I agree with Qube and Mr Driller being filler. But Cool boarders and Destruction Derby are both great games! Many hours lost to those in the past!

 

I'd have liked to seen a C&C in there, however.

Destruction Derby was great, but my word was it repetitive - from the soundbites when you hit other cars, to the tracks in the championship (bowl, figure 8, repeat FOREVER). DD2 would have been a better call IMO.

I'm surprised Puzzle Bobble (or whatever it was called) isn't on the list. If I remember anything from the magazines of the day, it was that Rayman and Puzzle Bobble seemed to be constantly being recommended as must have, stone cold classic, Platinum purchases. They didn't appeal to my tastes, and weren't what I thought a PlayStation game should be.

...Crash Team Racing! Darn. It should have had CTR on it. Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move would have been a good shout actually - that game's a massive time sink.

Sony using open source emulator for PlayStation Classic plug-and-play

 

Sony's upcoming PlayStation Classic uses the open source emulator PCSX ReARMed to recreate its selection of 20 classic games. Kotaku's recent hands-on report with the plug-and-play HDMI system noticed an on-screen menu listing a legal license for the emulator.

 

ReARMed is a popular, modernized branch of the original PCSX emulator, which was actively developed from 2000 to 2003 for Linux, Mac, and Windows. A new branch called PCSX Reloaded picked up that development later in the decade, adding new features and fixing bugs and eventually leading to the ReARMed fork. The emulator supports network play and a "save rewind" feature that lets you easily reverse recent gameplay, two features that seem to be missing from the PlayStation Classic.

Feeling pretty disappointed with the ps classic so going to give it a miss I think. There's just too many issues with it. Poor game selection, bare bones emulation features, no rumble/analogue on the controllers.

 

Seems like a very poor effort on Sony's part compared to the recent Nintendo mini consoles.
