Using Smart Notebook software on 3rd Party boards

I am pretty sure that if my old school moved to Interactive panels they will assume that they can keep using Notebook

and many others will as well

 

One of the reasons that the move was never put forward was me going on about 'cost over 5 years' and including stuff like this

Without me being there I think they are likely to just use it anyway and never realise that it is ilegal

@mikeprice - they can if they're using up to 11.4, but it'll stop working eventually...

 

You can't blame SMART for charging for SLS - we've had it pretty good for years, being able to install and use the software all over school after just buying one board... they need to charge to justify developing the software and features... Most software's going SAAS, hasn't Promethean gone the same way? I've never looked into the costs or licensing models for that, but I'd heard it had...

That is for users of SMART hardware. The pricing for non-SMART hardware is very different.

It wasn't cost effective to go for non smart boards and buy the software. Smart are always going to make you pay a premium if you don't buy their boards. Teachers love the software though!

That's the thing - when we made the switch, it was cost effective - we bought a 3 year license for £9k. The problem is that they scrapped that scheme and started this new SLS based scheme, which costs massively more than the old scheme.

Indeed. However, their price for non-SMART gear is very poor. It doesn't make any business sense either. A school will buy an interactive TV or board once every 10 years roughly. The profit on hardware is significantly lower than on software, but they reduce the price for those who have only generated them a small amount of profit anyway. Then they look at those people who want their software but not hardware and think "screw em, we'd rather have no income than charge a sensible price they'd pay every year".

 

Illogical.

I don't know about the older versions of notebook. But when our licence for ran out, Notebook 17 threw up a lot of "unlicensed" messages and watermarked everything, apart from computers connected to smart touch-screens (E70 and SB600 series boards).

 

So newer versions of Notebook do appear to be able to tell what they're plugged into and (licencing wise) react to it.

The very very old free version of Notebook ( that the Smart support line pointed me to) seems to work fine on anything

 

but it is old so no new features and no support if it stops working due to some update or other

well yes - if they use it on other products they would be going against the T&C - but I suspect a lot of school are not aware of this and/or don't care.

this is especially true of Primary school who don't have a full time tech (like us lot) that is aware of these things. Also a lot of schools will be aware of this - 'cos of someone like us lot - but carry on anyway. Just like they do when they show films etc etc etc
