Happy Birthday Windows 98

As you can see from today's banner, it's the 20th anniversary of Windows 98 becoming available to buy for the general public.

I sort of miss the small footprint, upgraded graphics from Windows 95 and more configuration.

Lets not talk about the general flakiness, the need to run a disk check almost daily and (very) ropey USB and driver support.

So here's to you Windows 98, you made us appreciate all the following versions of Windows all that bit more*

 

 

*Windows ME and Vista excepted**

 

**Possibly Windows 8 too

I mean, It might have been because I had Second Edition but I didn't experience many issues really and used it daily for many years. When I first started working at a school (my current one) they were using Windows 98 on all the student machines (and for a few years too) and this gave me chance to work with it on a Domain level which was (wasn't?) fun.

 

So here's to you Windows 99...

Yup - I remember Windows 98

 

that was in the days when you would expect to have to restart the PC several times a day - just because

 

I was part of a team that was responsible for connecting some PCs to a VMS server - that was fun!!

 

Then Windows NT came along and suddenly all our PC problems went away - PCs stayed up all day - connections to multiple types of machine worked

 

configuration was simple (ish)

Got loads of floppies lying around and probably still at the bottom of my kit bag.

 

98SE was great for boot from floppy troubleshooting start up. Even when you had to carry a floppy drive with you and plug it in. Them days are gone now.

 

It’s not quite the same with a flashy Win PE CD.

You can sell some floppy disks - blank or used - on ebay.

Have a look - search for Floppy Disks and then click "completed items" down the left hand side to see what they have actually sold for (sold price in green)

Really liked Win 98se, took me an age to move to XP at the time.
