pooley Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 The HT has been on a course about staff well-being. One of the things she's brought back is a request to set work hours for emails. She still wan't email to work if the staff member wants to use it, but she doesn't want notifications to sound on devices (mainly mobile devices). Has anyone implemented this or something similar? Our emails are all O365. Cheers Si 1
witch Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 If she wants the email to work but the recipient to not be bothered by notifications, then surely it is the user who turns them off?
pooley Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 That's what I said, but teachers are hopeless.
DGardiner Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 if people dont want notification dont put it on their phone and/or set dnd schedules on their devices - maybee some basic guides on how to configure these? but its not really your concern a bit of self control goes a long way
PotNoodleTech Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 Yep we instruct teachers to turn off notifications for school emails. If they don't that's up to them. They are adults after all!
sted Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 the settings have to be in office 365 somewhere i imagine as iirc french law requires basically this but ive never found them. you might be able to do it (i have not tested it this is a thought experiment) if you have office 365 linked to ad with the logon hours section of the users account something like this

Boredguy Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 One way is not to link their account to the phone and don't login out of hours, but we know that in this day and age no-one will actually do that. I have a mail tip set on my account stating I won't read messages after 4pm, but that doesn't stop any of the staff from sending e-mails at stupid o'clock even though it pops up at the top of the message when they compose it!
DrCheese Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 I'm pretty sure you can't do what she's asking without scheduling an account disable (Which would break email entirely rather than just hiding notifications) on your AD, if you're using ADFS for authentication. Else it's down to the user to disable notifications for work email (I do this)
sted Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 this wont allow users to continue to work as they wish though right? as it disables their account outside of hours? then youre back to educating users into how to use do not disturb/night mode really
Andycat Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 You can't do this with the Outlook app. It's a request they've had for ages. It's notifications on or off.
Dave_G Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 That's what I said, but teachers are hopeless. I bet a lot of them have managed to add a photo to their Office 365 profile with zero help though! 2

Boredguy Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 That article also states that blocking authentication isn't a good approach. It's even more of a headache if you have other sites that are using your 365 credentials for authentication as it doesn't just block access to e-mail but everything 365 related.
pooley Posted June 21, 2018 Author Posted June 21, 2018 OK thanks guys and gals, have advised the HT that this is a WET issue and not a technical one and to advise staff accordingly.
Katy Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 We tried something similar, you end up with people who want to work late complaining they have to mess about to do so (or can't if you disable it), and in the end it was the same member of SMT that requested it wanting to work late here!

This all comes from the HT who doesn't sleep a lot and send emails at 4,5,6 am now worrying this is detrimental to staff. Who knew? lol

PotNoodleTech Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 yep, thats why my phone goes dnd from 10 till 7am Yeh same here, DND except for morning alarm. I do want to get disturbed by that!
DGardiner Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 if its key staff worried about something coming back on them sell them a boomerang subscription https://www.boomeranggmail.com/ they can hurf emails all night and set them to send at an acceptable time...
strawberry Posted June 21, 2018 Posted June 21, 2018 The first time something like this is implemented it will be a week before some important bod insists that their emails are vital and need to be delivered and read in real time and that an exception has to be made for emails they send out. 1
peej2k Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Isn't this a legal requirement in France? I'm sure there is a setting available somewhere but turned off outside of France. And strawberry is absolutely right. The moment you switch it on, someone will insist on an exception for them.
Domino Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 Isn't this a legal requirement in France? No, it's not. You can't force or expect someone to check their email etc outside their core hours in France. There's no law about removing notifications/access. 2
