I've tried this before multiple times on 1709 and just given up, but trying again with 1803 to get OneDrive files on demand (or even just onedrive sync) to actually work.

I have a software restriction policy but have added an exception for *.exe inside %appdata%\local\microsoft\onedrive\ which should allow onedrive.exe to run. Manually running this file shows no errors, nothing logs anywhere and the EXE runs for about 5 seconds (as spotted in task manager) then vanishes. Nothing actually appears on screen and nothing appears in the system tray. There's also nothing showing in explorer anywhere.

How do you get this thing to work? What is it meant to look like? I've manually ran c:\windows\syswow64\onedrivesetup.exe as the first step, which takes ages and puts some files in %appdata% (does every user need to do this step on their first logon to each machine? How's that any good when it takes a good 3 minutes to run? Or is it actually quick and it's the fact my test PC is complete rubbish making it feel slow...)

Does Onedrive rely on stuff out of the Windows store? Surely if it did then it wouldn't just be a normal EXE though.

I've got the GPO settings on Computer->Admin->OneDrive to turn on Files on Demand. I can't see anything set to prevent onedrive from running. I've got the Onedrive Mapper script also running, does it not like this being there? (Shouldn't it actually tell me this instead of just doing nothing? I can't really take this away as then nobody has their mapped onedrive as they're mostly on 1607)

The only time i've seen it do something like that is when you have the GPO that's prevents using onedrive for file storage. Not tried it with the mapper script before, but take it doing an RSOP doesn't show any additional GPOs applying?

The only Onedrive related setting showing from RSOP is the "use files on demand" set to Enabled, unless there is one that isn't within the Onedrive "folder" stopping it? Would be nice if it actually logged anywhere normal instead of making .etl files that nothing will read.

Edit: It does exactly the same thing (i.e. nothing) when logged in as local admin too so can't be a group policy setting :(

Might be worth setting the GPO for preventing it to run to disabled (not - not configured), and gpupdate one machine. I know there were issues with it not updating/re-enabling itself if it was disabled previously if you just removed the option

Not sure if this could be it but it looks like your *.exe exception '%appdata%\local\microsoft\onedrive\' should actually be '%localappdata%\microsoft\onedrive\'. I think %appdata% goes to the roaming folder in the profile

Will try it... although if it was being blocked by software restriction it should say "Administrator has blocked you from running this" as it does with any other EXE blocked via SRP.

Where's that setting? All I can see in Users\Admin Templates\OneDrive is to prevent personal (i.e. non business) from syncing.

Do you have a

appdata local Microsoft OneDrive setup logs

folder?

The files in there should be helpful. Use procmon to watch how they get created as onedrivesetup.exe does its stuff.

It's full of ETL files but no idea how to open them, it's binary data so can't just open them in notepad.

Rather than fighting against microsofts poor attempt at getting this right, personally i suggest this method: OneDriveMapper | Liebensraum just runs as a powershell logon script, not many settings you need to change. Creates a mapped drive directly to your one drive, no syncing involved at all, entirely files on demand, just without any fancy UI to it.

Sorry if that's not very helpful to your original issue though :)

It's a computer policy not user one, it's something like comp admin templates windows components one drive I think off hand. Will check once at pc again

We're already using this, problem is it's relying on WebDAV which doesn't appear to have had any work done on it since windows 2000 - try and copy a file over 50MB or so and it just fails (would prefer it to say "you can't do that" or something rather than appearing to work then not doing)

I seem to recall that I would experience the same issues if the application detected a previous installed instance during the initial setup... Have you attempted to delete the existing OneDrive install files from the AppData location?

Will try it tomorrow - although I have been testing on a freshly installed PC with a user who has never logged onto it before.

Thing is everyone says "you do this and it just works" but it doesn't for me, same problem I had with Direct Access - "it just works" yet it didn't, as nobody appeared to have tried installing it on a network that was already using IPv6 (the fix there was adding a route on the core switch pointing the DA subnet via the DA server, not mentioned anywhere in any guides or any instructions). Impossible to find anything useful on a search when it appears to work fine for everybody else in the universe!

If it makes you feel any better, I have the same problem running this... doesn't seem to do anything, even when uninstalling and downloading the client from the web to reinstall.

I take the purge didn't work?

Yeah, I deleted them after uninstall... not that there was much left in the folders.

Might work for Katy though.

Not had time to try anything with it yet. Probably going to abandon it until my new "test PCs" turn up (Very PC have run out of motherboards so they are now delayed, grrr). I was getting nowhere very slowly testing on two computers that take almost a minute to respond to me pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Does anybody know if the OneDrive client will work with Azure AD connect seamless SSO or do we need to be fully federated?

We have managed to get OneDrive to run but doesn’t login automatically even though or other office apps do.

It does work but its hit and miss for us! We have reached a 70% pass rate now and still working to get it running without using any third party tools or AdFS

Works fine for us. First time start up takes a while as the 1709 built in client needs to upgrade on first launch (per user) to get FoD features.

See the section 'Silently configure OneDrive using Windows 10 or domain credentials' on this page https://support.office.com/en-us/article/use-group-policy-to-control-onedrive-sync-client-settings-0ecb2cf5-8882-42b3-a6e9-be6bda30899c
