Provision the folder(s) via gpp, and redirect into those. OneDrive client catches up eventually.

 

Also SSD’s make it faster. (3 minutes for us)

 

We don’t restrict profiles, and do enforce seating plans (while school behaviour policy, not an IT lead initiative), so generally this delay happens only once per user room per imaging cycle.

 

OneDrive mostly signs on automatically, though we too are seeing quite a few SSO/AzureAD hybrid join failures. Going to open a ticket with MS as soon as I get a chance.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread -

 

we currently have OneDrive FOD working for staff (silent sign-in works 90% of the time) but for students when they click on the OneDrive link on the start menu it does seemingly nothing, however logged in as a staff member on a student PC it does launch OneDrive after 30 or so seconds.

 

I figured this was a software restriction, but I don't have anything locked in APPDATA or C: - I recall a post somewhere on here that said you needed to 'unrestrict' the C: drive GPO; anyone know if this is still the case?

 

As Katy says the OneDrive Mapper is great, but causes a problem with files over 50MB and students aren't patient enough!

 

Any ideas anyone?

The one thing that stopped alot of issues for us was the new per machine install switch. Login times are also much quicker!

We've been struggling with it taking up to 10 minutes for Onedrive to be ready for a first logon at a machine. This switch has brought it down to just 20-30s after a first logon for it to be ready. Why it's taken so long for them to release this is anyone's guess but hey ho! It's here now!

Is this a new GPO setting? Currently running 1803 but can't remember what version of GPO we're on -

 

Also do you not get the 'This action has been cancelled by your system administrator' when they browse to the OneDrive folder on explorer? (This is what I think the deny access to C: GPO is doing, but no way I can turn that off)

Not a GPO setting, no, but a deployment option. From Onedrive client version 19.043.0304.0003 you can run onedrivesetup.exe /allusers which will swap Onedrive into per-machine install mode so that when users log on to a pc for the first time they no longer have to wait while Onedrive runs the per-user install. We don't get the "action cancelled..." message but then again we don't disable access to c:, just hide it. Everything on there is protected with permissions anyhow and blocking C: access breaks a few things, Onedrive being one of them.

We allow access to C: but hide it, and also have set the GPO to remove/prevent access to "Run" on the start menu - this stops them being able to type things like "C:" into the address bar.

So... Is anywhere using this as their only means of student/staff storage? I keep coming up against issues with that make me antsy about doing this at the mo.... Sign in Speeds, Large files, Syncing files (But logging off before syncing finished), Lack of quick mapping for sharepoint libraries etc

Only means? No, and for the foreseeable future it will stay that way. Primary means? Definitely yes. We have a few cranky old apps that insist on having a local drive mapping without which they barf and try saving stuff into places like C:\Windows\System32 which leads to amusing results so we still have a home drive for all users mapped to a local share, but the usage is minimal. The total space used by the whole of year 7 this year averages out at just 8MB per student for example. (Y7 are the first intake year that have almost exclusively used Onedrive so the other years don't directly compare.) Everything else student- and staff-wide (per user) gets stored on Onedrive.

 

For shared folders (like all schools have, I think, we have a staff shared drive for holding piles and piles of teaching resources, tracking and monitoring data, recordings of coursework etc.) storage is currently local but over the next year we will be moving departments over to Sharepoint storage. Sharepoint repos appear very quickly for us in File Explorer and other apps that are Sharepoint aware.

 

Sign-in speeds should be pretty much instant if you've installed the latest Onedrive client using the /allusers switch. It converts it from being a per-user install (so taking 5 mins to install when a user first uses a particular pc) into a per-machine one so that when a user first logs on to a pc, they have Onedrive available within about 10s of the desktop appearing.

Syncing files can be an issue as you say but we've finally managed to get pretty much everyone "Onedrive aware" in that they check that Onedrive reports "Up to date" before signing out.

 

It's not an easy path to follow and I suspect the entire process will have taken us about 2 years before we're finished but the payoff in terms of storage needs is massive.
