Which is what I thought about the musical

 

Queen are my favourite band, I love their music and so much that they've done. I just wish that Brian May and Roger Taylor would retire, I can't help but think that the amount of squeezing that they've done on the Queen legacy is going to end up ruining it. How many compilation albums have they put out since Freddie Mercury died? How many remasters, reissues and live albums? And now this film with another compilation album. The whole thing seems cynical and money grabbing and it makes me sad.

They certainly don't need the money. But, there's a demand for the music and if you love what you do, of course you're going to keep looking for excuses to put stuff out.

Queen are like any other ‘historic’ band ... their back catalogue is a way of gaining a new audience in each new musical generation (I think it was Malcolm McLaren who said a musical generation is the length of time it takes for one genre of music to be hated the first time it is heard by a new bunch of money spending teenagers!)

 

There is also something to be said for remastering ... as much as I love some albums, the production was crap and they sound so dated ... and if the are remastered and reproduced you can get a vastly different sound. Take Freddie’s solo work as an example.

 

I won’t by everything ... but I will buy things I find has changed more towards my liking.

 

Then again, I’m also picking up some rereleases now that I didn’t have ... because my daughter prefers some original tracks.

I always pick up originals if I'm getting a remastered version, just because. Whether it's music, movies or games.

I don't blame Queen for carrying on, they still want to play music, they still make music (separately) and their tours with Adam Lambert are clearly doing well, bringing many new fans on board for what can only be described as "proper music". It's not their fault they were not around when Freddie was, and they will struggle to ever see someone who's anywhere near as good.

 

And anyone that doesn't prepare themselves physically and mentally for the first couple of minutes of Bohemian, whether sat in an office or driving a car, prepping themselves up for a massive impromptu headbanging session, right on cue, is just a pleb.

I would have given both testicles, a kidney and my right ear to have seem them live. I'd have chucked in both legs to have seem them at Live Aid. I have a Live at Wembley DVD which I've played in my man cave often, very loudly

I was at Knebworth too. Brilliant! I also saw them at Elland Road in 1982

I'm not entirely convinced that they were wrong to either.

You had to take the musical as a musical written by Ben Elton with some smashing music not a Queen concert. I still miss it greatly and looking forward to when The Show Must Go On finally is let escape to the stage and we have a spiritual home again

 

As for seeing the film may go tomorrow afternoon or evening if I get time moving house seems never ending!

 

I'm sadly one that is too young to have seen them all live but have enjoyed Bri and Rog on stage at WWRY playing which was brilliant.

 

The remastered works can be good, look at what they did with Barcelona I am damn sure that had Freddie had the balls at the time he would have done the full orchestra version but I'm guessing time was precious to him and Monsie and whilst the original is lovely Stuart Morley did an amazing job at the reorchestration of it.

I'm looking forward to seeing this, critics notwithstanding. I'm not even saying the critics are wrong to have concerns, but I'm a big enough fan to want to see the film anyway. As Freddy was one of the first of my "boyhood heroes" to die, along with David Rocastle, and I cried like a baby at the time, I suspect there will be tears in the movie for me. Go on, make me feel really old.

 

I saw them in November 1974 at The Rainbow in Finsbury Park, then Bristol, and on the Queen's (the monarch, not the band!) silver jubilee in 1977 at Earl's Court.
