All the kids can, even the (young) teacher can (and say its painfully loud). But me, the old duffer with ears that have suffered from years of riding loud motorcycles can hear nothing.

 

So the question is, do I replace it for a fault that I cant verify?

Tell the kids to go to nightclubs and music concerts more often. A bit of tinnitus will sort them out.

There is a way for you to diagnose it. Just use your phone, or other favorite sound recorder. Chuck the file into a sound editor or reasonably advanced player. You should then be able to play it back at a lower speed and as a result frequency which you should be able to be able to hear.

Yes it is.

 

And the sound recorder idea is great. I'm going to try that out.

It could well be on its way out then. It's pretty normal for CRTs to do this. The next thing you'll usually notice (over time), is the colours looking too red or too green.

As its a CRT the squeal will be the FBT (fly back transformer) it is very common for these to wear out and when CRTs were more expensive it was even cost effective to replace them. In the present however its probably easier just to replace the whole unit. Or tell them that it is the computers turbo charger in which case they may think that it's cool . Thanks for the 'thanks'.

..I once had a AMD K6-400 machine I built myself. It had a 14" CRT from an old Dell 486. I was playing around with a certain MAME emulator and decided I wanted to play Paperboy with the original Arcade resolutions!

 

Well, the monitor duly went eeeeeeccccchhh for oh about 0.5sec and then there was this sudden flash/bang. The spark came out the top of the case and travelled a good 2/3 feet in the air. At the same time I jumped back a good 5/6 feet.

 

I still don't know how I managed to survive the ensuing heart attack!

You mean the kids at your school haven't already played this sound during lessons to cause a distraction? It was quite common a while ago.

I have a similar problem, only i can't seem to smell anything. My nasal passages seem to be permanently blocked.

I remember the joys of that, we had one at high school do that and the teacher couldn't hear it but we all could, was rather funny but got annoying when they thought we were taking the pee. Eventually the screen died but we did get a younger member of staff to agree and confirm they could hear it as well.

Same here - I'm not keen on the sound of CRTs monitors (or TVs come to that) in a very quiet room even when that haven't started to go!

We have a few that do this. This is usually down to the copper coils resonating sometime the ones in the transformer but more commonly the ones on the back of the tube. Our service engineers used to just pop the back off and run some wood glue accros the coils this solved it every time.

 

Of course they were qualified service engineers i'm not suggesting that you take the back off a CRT unless you know what you're doing.
