I will be off now for the last 2 weeks of our school holiday and have ordered a vb.net book and the software so I'm going to have a bash and try and transfer over my VB script skills into some proper VB skills and learn alot along the way no doubt!!!

all programming language have upside and downside just as c, cobol, ruby, php and vb all have problems and all have good points.

 

But what it comes down to is two things if people use it then you should learn it...

 

At end of day not going to hurt you knowing a anothier language there is a school of thought that every developer should learn at least one new langauge each year...

 

Anyway back on topic what will do on monday is tally up what people have said and most popular lang wins....

I voted for VB.NET since im starting to learn it and I have some transferable skills to start with.

also some kind soul has said they should be able to host a cvs system for edugeek will not say there name as not set in stone but if they come forward then great.

 

Also what version of visual studio or what ever are people using... only thing that might throw spanner in works is that vs 2003 and 2005 can not share source code so one or the other..

Well depending on a time scale of when we get started id say 2003 since 2005 is still in beta. I assume 2005 will have some kind of code upgrade option like VB 6 to 2003 (although how good I have no idea). Saying that though by time we get everything sorted 2005 may be released properly.

That would also mean me shelling out again

well 2005 you can convert 2003 code to 2005 but you can not save back to 2003

 

Well can get beta version of 2005 for free from website... but really either way as i have not got 2003 so going to have to payout in some way..

I (should when it turns up) be getting the beta of visual studio 2005 soon, but cant fork out (surprise surprise) to buy a Visual Studio license.

 

I got VB 6 Pro nice 'n' legally tho lol

Ive not had chance to do anyhting yet got family over last couple of days. Going to convert my user import script to a HTA then I will get stuck in.

It might be worth considering that this app will need to run on Vista, so that means a .NET based language is the way to go...?

 

In the past I have produced a VB based user manager (with bulk import), which almost, kind of worked. Since then I've moved to an Excel template and a VB script which does the business for me now. As these have been developed for my employer (local council) I would not be able to share them, but I would be happy to assist, if I can, with the new development.

ok lets move forward again...

 

lets say use vb.net 2003 as main language using people that must use 2005 remember two things one there have been some language improvments since 2003 version so some might not work and you can't just upload it have to upload project files have to upload the .vb files as 2005 and 2003 project files are different...

Well ive got HTML and CSS skiills, and i code database driven c#.net websites, so my vote went on C# im afraid (not a fan of VB)

 

Suggestion: make the frontend web based? dump it on an IIS box with the correct security and you can delegate tasks to trusted users, also means its very customisable. Also means you could make it database driven (msde?, unless you have a fully blown SQL box to dump it on of course) and have bolt-on module suport?

Problem with that is you then need to install it on a server etc in someways you want something that is easier to install and adding it is part of the webpage can have problems anyone who uses cc3 will vouch for that...

OK guys, heres my 2 pence worth,

 

Before we start doing any specs or deciding what should be in it or how it looks we need to decide on a common language.

 

There is no use going any further before we get to that.

 

The following questions I have:

 

1) What Language (c#.net / vb.net)

2) Do we have a definate set of people who are going to be working on the project.

3) Project managers do we have them?

4) Central file/project store (cvs / source safe) that all members can get at.

 

Given the potentail scope of the project people need to be sure that they can commit the time to the project before they commit to joining.

 

I have seen it before where people are full of the joys of spring when something is new but then it hits home just how much time and effort is involved.

 

Just my 2 pence ;-)
