ok lets make use of you these techys in one place an ideas a project of somekind that the edugeek community can work on as whole.

 

Have you got some kind of software that you wished you had or some kind of soluntion you need maybe it is free software that will help you map you network designed for schools...

 

what ever put forward your ideas...

How about keyboards and mice that protect themselves when they are being vandalised by giving a large electric shock? :D Oh sorry you said software hmmm....

I thonk a good starting point would be a better Windows user control interface which would allow bulk user creation, usergroup migration and mass settings changes, user areas and group memberships for example.

This could be made more generic so that it includes aspects of stock control, requests for practicals and a helpdesk. That way it would be useful to lab techs and computer techs.

I had to think hard what you meant by that - a 'killer app' for lab technicians would be very useful here! :lol:

There is a piece of software that does that, thats been mentioned here before called LanView3

Hope MS make a corp version of MS Antispyware, although with recent news on the Claria spyware "ignoring" choice & that they may be having "dealings" with them, I'm not so sure I'd want it lol

They already have and it's being "Selectively" tested at the moment but there will be a price tag on it on a per desktop basis.

Unless I'm half-asleep, I dont see any difference in this posts to the normal MS product. They bought out 'giant software' as I'm sure we all know, but this doesn't indicate anything different. The very first screenshot has even got giant on it still lol

 

I know that they are still providing support and updates to all those using the pre-MS versions of the software but to what you can get generally (as this is beta still), I haven't seen one.

 

 

Thats more like it :) I'd like to beta test this :D

 

Dont mean to apear nasty - but just havent heard of it (mainstream) since the buy out - thats all I mean :)

 

I suggest we continue this in the spyware thread though if you want to chat more about it - but for this topic, we are off subject, but thanks for posting this tho :)

had a look at that. i still maintain that I would prefer a standalone screen disabler. and not with all that other stuff.

To push this forward then...

 

I like this idea if we did this what would people want from it in terms of features etc

 

and people willing to work on it what would you want the software to be developed in i.e what programming language etc

 

Would be willing to host a cvs system on my site etc so need people willing to help write it and people to push project forward oming up design ideas, graphics all the usual stuff etc

I think that as a tool a complete user management interface seperate from Microsofts awkward and at times bloody useless server GUI would be welcome. A list of features should (or might) include:

 

Bulk user creation, with the option of setting up usernames with a pupil identification context such as 05Nuser for a user called New User who joined the school in 2005. Several other options could also be integrated such as teachers initials for their usernames. Users should be impoterd from primarily CSV files and optionally from Excel or Access.

 

Bulk Group management. This would allow admins to move, join or prune users from groups en-mass.

 

User Backup. Perform a backup of the LDAP users database and allow for user restoration. This could be useful for sooooo many reasons.

 

I have no idea which language should be used, but such a project has to be worthwhile.

I "dabble" with Visual Basic 6 Pro to make a (crappy) front end for my CD I make up.

 

I really need to knuckle down with it lol

 

But really dont know what programming lang we should use - a combo of a few maybe performing different tasks - one for gui (VB6), one for scripts (batch or vbs), etc.

 

Does that make sense? *wishes he'd kept programming as a kid* ;)

Before we all get into which language we think it should be in, should we not check which languages we can all code in? No sense settling on something like C# if no-one can code in it...

 

Personally I can code in basic HTML and some (extremely) basic VB script/VBA and that's about it!

Just the ability to create users from a csv and put them into groups/ou would be fantastic. My gps do the rest, ie create user folder and link it to my documents.

 

I rant again, this SHOULD be part of the microsoft server OS. Have you seen that advert on telly from microsoft going on about it's the best thing in education since sliced bread. What a load of rubbish. About the only thing they've done for education was MS encarta. But server/desktop software? They should take a lesson from Apple's macmanager.

 

Rant over and sorry for being slightly off-topic :)

I can code in VME, but since none of you will have heard of it (which is a shame as its' so good (for a mainframe language)), I can code a little in VB6 &.net and come on, who can't use HTML. Now if I could just hone my skills on JavaScript and actionscript in Flash......

ok vb 6 know a little in vb.net awaiting latest beta version of .net studio to play with that when it comes..

 

But at end of day willing to learn gives me an excuse to learn now programming langauge ( one of my objectives this year)..

VB .NET would be better than 6 wouldn't it, since MS don't want you using anything less now?

 

VB .NET is something I know a little of and am willing to learn more but...
