right if look via wiki and the previous threads common lang between everybody was vb.net as it was what people knew or were willing to learn...

again cvs should be sorted got to speak to person who is going to host cvs system for us just he has been on hols...

as can see i am main one pushing this forward at moment mainly as it is part of my remit as to say as i suggested it etc... Hence i suspect project managers will be me plus one two other people. Then rest make up devlopement team...

So basicly looking for couple other people to volunteer as project managers and also need people to stand up to the plate (sorry had to baseball reference in) and volunters as developers..

I think really managers if vountering need to be able to use vb.net ok dont need to be guras in it but need some understanding of it...

The developers on other hand can be from basic skills right up to guras as hopefuly the more experinced people will help lesser skilled users..

so i am going to post in project forum some help wanted posts which you can reply to...

I've just added another requirement on the wiki. It's just occured to me that one thing we do with alarming regularity is to bulk move user areas, either to new drives or new servers. It would not be a huge task to add this feature, so the areas can be moved without losing file permissions, and I'm sure it would be one which is greatly needed.

Hi,

I'm an ICT Manager within a education partnerhship and often found myself using features of RM, Viglen, Schoolcare (local company), Winsuite, Ranger that i really really liked...but like most ICT ppl in education can not see why schools should pay a load of money for something a good configured windows server can do

So this lead me to code (and still am) a web interface for Active Directory which allows the users to do the following

Add user

Delete user

Bulk Add user

Bulk Delete

Set up share and permission

Enable/disable user

Remote PC system information

gpo refresh

Force Log off PC

What i would like to do but do not know how

Blank screens

deploy software (msi)

assign/remove gpo from ou

so maybe you could include those features.

Computer Listing

Drop Menu Interface (?)

User Info

User Listings

i've attached some screen shots

feed back is most welcomed

@uk101man: very good interface, I like it. I've also made a WOL script in ASP to pull in all machines that resides on the server. Is also schedule-able ;)

@Ric_: Re lab-techs: "This could be made more generic so that it includes aspects of stock control, requests for practicals and a helpdesk. That way it would be useful to lab techs and computer techs." I have also had the idea put to me about creating a ticket sort of system for the science department to improve the availability and organisation of practicals, but it hasn't gone far past initial discussions yet. I'm really interested in doing something in php/mysql (my favourite line of development - where's that option in the poll? :p).

I've already started work on Print Manager - http://www.craigrodway.f2s.com/PrintMan/ (familiar sort of interface for some of you ;)) test:test for admin user rights, demo:demo for regular user if anyone wants to give it a go :D

Going way back to the original question ....

How about a piece of software that will allow you to install & distribute educational software without having to create, amend, tweak, deploy and redeploy an msi on a network running anything from win 95 to XP/2003 and automaticaly add it to a DB stating when and where it is installed and also give the option of uninstalling it remotely.

Oh and be able to give out reports on when it was used, where and by who.

All in one neat package with a GUI interface.

Or something easy like rewrite the MS OS? :)

I think the deploy and DB entries wouldn't be too difficult ;) Depending on your definition of difficult that is. Redeploy? That may take a little WMI programming I think. Create and Amend would be a serious undertaking though need a few white papers on that I think. Possible WMI calls for the reports on used, where and who GUI is the easy bit lol.

Is anyone still alive in here?

I would possibly be interested in contributing as a developer. I have been working on my own vb.net application to mass create users.

I have completed most of the major functionality including:

Reading a CSV file

Creating the user object

Creating home folder

Sharing home folder

Setting folder permissions

I started developing it mainly as a mental exercise and a first project in vb.net, so I'm sure the code is not 100% optimised, it does however work.

well i know several people where looking into it but died a death due to various reasons...

So if you want to take mantle and lead it then do so best way is add gnu license to code and upload it here.

Then once done that I will sort out setting a proper cvs system up.

Hi,

Hopefully what I have attached will help get this project kick started.

When first running the program you will have to enter the domain controller name and your domain name (school.net). The reason for this is all to do with child domains

Written in vb.net

lol just figured out I can not attach zip files to my posts help!!!

Cheers

We've employed someone parttime to integrate CMIS with AD. Accounts will be created in SQL by admin staff then script will run nightly to hook into SQL and populate AD, Its SQL to AD so should be adaptable for SIMS, if you're familiar with the database structure and don't tell capita. When a student leaves the account will be disabled automatically. Script will also look at a CSV to add acounts from if we need emergency accounts. I've been given ok to GPL it, so will keep you posted. Its likely I'll post the script in parts rather than an entire program as it has been designed specifically for our architecture. It may not be a complete working solution, as it will need tailoring to individual sites. (its in VBS and I have some python components to add things like mail aliases and zimbra accounts from AD). We're in beta testing phase now so should be ready to go in few weeks, so far its looking v.good.

What I provide is an interface for the group project. It's easy interface to AD. I know it’s a bit rough around the edges but hey give should get us started.

I’m looking for people to undertake the following tasks:

Code the user panel

Add

Delete

Update details

Move user in AD

Reset Password

List user details

Open home drive / profile

Code the computer panel

Remote System Information

Remote Log Off

Remote Shut-Down

Remote Restart

Remote gpupdate

RDC launcher

VNC launcher

Move Computer in AD

Remote Logon

Code the mass panel

Mass move of users/computers in AD

Mass delete of users

Mass add of users

Mass Reset Password

Mass remote Log Off of computers

Mass remote Shut-Down of computers

Mass remote Restart of computers

Mass remote logon

Code AD panel

Search

Search for not used in x amount of days

I know all of the above is possible and there are plenty of help on the web. I can where needed provide help.

If we work together I’m sure we can turn out an application to help all schools and save them money.
