xxlonewolfxx123 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Currently I am working on getting our school migrated to Windows 10 and am looking at the Redirected desktop as I am overhauling everything. We currently have an extremely messy desktop with shortcuts to websites, all office shortcuts, shared drive shortcuts and loads of random programs. Now I hate this and want to tidy it up however seeing as we are unable to do any sort of auto-arrange by file type or A-Z (as I am unable to find a way to do this?) then I am interested in how everyone else has their desktops and what shortcuts do you have on your desktop and do you put all office shortcuts into a folder on there to reduce the amount? Cheers for all Input.

FishCustard Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 ClassicShell is great, and what I use for W10, but that theme? As for the desktop, I have nothing on it other than shell icons (Computer, Recycle Bin, etc.), and put all the shortcuts in the Start Menu. 1

Rob_D Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 This is our current redirected desktop. We cut down a lot of junk by compiling all the random web links into a simple "Intranet Page". Most of our programs run from the redirected start menu. We chose to stick with the regular windows 10 start menu. I can see the bonus of having it actually say Start due to users not knowing what the start menu is. It didn't say start in windows 7 or vista, so users should be used to it by now. Right? 1

Yes I have actually as I use it as my personal desktop organizer but never really thought about using it onsite.

The minimal desktop is, in part, a remnant of one of our old networks where the desktop was chaotic: Staff kept requesting icon after icon. We had a lot of lower spec machines and there was a performance hit on start up and logon. Answer: Get rid of stuff from the desktop!

Our LEA put this network together for us. I have just had a look through where I would expect that setting to have been configured and it isn't there. I will keep looking and post again if I find it.

Far easier to search for whatever it is in the Start Menu than hunt around on the desktop. EDIT: Also, we redirect the desktop to the user's home folder to prevent people bloating their profiles when they save stuff there. I could disable saving to desktop, but it's better user experience to just redirect it and let them do what they want. Edited March 14, 2018 by FishCustard

Would be interested to perhaps see an example of your start menu layout .xml for Win10 as mine was a bugger which is why I resorted to ClassicShell atm.

Could be. I have an engineer visiting next week. I will see if I can get him to point me in the right direction. He might not though, there are scripts on the network that have a copyright declaration at the top. 1
Katy Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 (edited) I did have all icons removed and disabled (or whatever the policy is called), however with how useless windows 10 has been with start menus I relented and put a copy of the pinned tiles onto the desktop, for when the pinned tiles were missing: Edit: "Subject Progra...." is "Subject Program Links" - this opens an explorer window with subject folders, each full of shortcuts to their installed software. Saves filling up the start menu (or now desktop) with it. Also, "Old Outlook" = Outlook 2016, "Outlook 365" = OWA. I tried to get rid of outlook 2016 completely but had to add it back in Edited March 14, 2018 by Katy 1
Davit2005 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 I have only generaly done redirected desktops for students for 2 reasons. 1. Stops them saving to them 2. Enables us to push a link out very quickly. In both cases at the most it has been 5 icons, too many icons can get confusing for any age 1
