ExamWritePad 4530 same user opens fine - open with any account students and staff and administrator

 

ExamWritePad 4650 - same user EWP refuses to open - opens as administrator but not student or staff accounts

 

ExamWritePad 4700 - same user EWP refuses to open - opens opens as administrator but not student or staff accounts

 

all tests are carried out on the same computer

With default config or edited to suit? Any chance you could try with both config with the different users please?

Ok so I looked through the log file and the only noticeable change is the fact that the EWP needs read/write permissions to the Windows Temp folder for the users

it seems something is trying to write to c: from version 4530 as we can run that version with any accounts and version from this only works when we log in a an administrator on the same machine

Does anything get written to c: when in as admin?

 

The only read/wrote permissions needed are in the programdata folder and windows temp.

Yep, I managed to replicate it too!

 

The reason why it was moved to there was because users with profiles that got deleted at log off would have deleted the log file, giving you nothing to look at in order to fix it.

 

I probably should have said in the documentation make sure users accounts have read/write access to windows temp, lesson learned!!

Weird thing is, that if the windows temp is not writable, it is supposed to drop back to programdata, will need to check that bit of code.

I had more schools asking for it this way because their profiles get deleted at logoff.

Right, ok folks, change of plan, given that it seems a few of you are battening down the hatches in terms of windows temp, I’m going to change the default location of the log file to programdata inside the EWP folder. This folder is never deleted or touched generally and is safe to store it there with all the other EWP stuff. When I officially release version 4.7 in a few weeks, I will highlight a few things extra as pointers to watch out for if needs be.

With v4.7.0.0 re-released version, the log file generated will now reside in:

“c:\programdata\examwritepad\examwritepad\4.7.0.0”

Finally solved the Crash on start-up issue if file permissions are not set to write a specific folders.

 

 

Here is the full list below:

· FIXED: ‘Start-up Fullscreen Mode’ would not apply when double clicking on an ExamText file to open it. Therefore, allowing a candidate to bypass the full screen restrictions.

 

 

· UPGRADED: TextControl has been upgraded to x19 Service Pack 2 (contains numerous fixes).

 

 

· UPGRADED: EWP is compiled and written with Visual Studio, which has been upgraded to version 16.9.4

 

 

· ADDED: “SaveWithoutPrompt” config option has been added for those that wish to save the file directly without displaying the Save Prompt Dialog box, basically suppressing it. 0 = Shoe Save Dialog box as normal, 1 = Suppress (Do not show).

 

 

· ADDED: With the above in mind, if you now turn on the config option “SaveAs_NoOverwrite”, every time you click on SaveAs or the document autosaves, it will create a new file with the Date/Time appended to its filename. The same approach used by the autobackup function.

 

 

FIXED: Issue on start-up if the Windows Temp folder was not writeable for the log file to be generated. The default log file will now be stored on the programdata folder. If that fails it, will not produce a log file.

Thanks for making this software.. I've just finished deploying to our exam laptops and it's working really well on almost all accounts!

We've just hit a slight snag with printing. And we get the error "The document paper size is not compatible with the selected printer." - Printing to PDF works absolutely fine so I can use this as a workaround but just wondered if you had any thoughts?

Hi,

 

Welcome to EWP, the reason for this is because it look for A4 in the list of paper sizes, the selected printer doesn’t seem to have the required size.

 

If you can send me the log file which will contain the paper sizes and I can take a look.

 

To generate a log file, run EWP and go to print. The the error appears close down EWP and then the HTML log file will be generated in either:

C:\Programdata\examwritepad\examwritepad\4.7.1.0

 

Or the temp folder of the user account logged in.

 

Please send it to [email protected], you may have to copy paste the content rather than attached the HTML file.

When you save the ExamText file to a USB stick and plug it into another computer and open it the body of the text isn't saved (apart from the header & footer) and when exported into a Word Doc same again you can't see the body of text. ​However​ if you put the USB stick back into the laptop we used for EWP and open the file in EWP then you can see it all.

Welcome to to EWP and thanks for raising your issue.

 

Can I ask that you send to me the EXAMTEXT file by email to [email protected] and I will check the contents of it at my end.

 

I'm really stumpted as to why it fails to open up correctly on another PC. Can you do the following for me please as a test:

 

1) Save the file to a USB stick as normal.

2) Close EWP, open notepad and open the EWP file in notepad to see if the part of the XML has the text you see on screen, albeit in RTF formatting.

3) If the file looks OK, take the USB to another PC and open it in notepad again to confirm its is still the same as the original PC.

4) Then open the ExamText file in EWP and does it still look ok? But did you double click on the ExamText file or open EWP first then select open existing button?
