Just started looking into EWP and it looks quite interesting - I'm just not sure on the best method of deploying custom config files? Can this be done with the MSI during install (else, if not, is the alternative to modify the config in the directory and deploy as a portable)? I don't really like the idea of running the config from a share and have a shortcut pointing to it. Thanks!

There are many ways to deploy EWP.

 

You can push out the MSI as is, then point the shortcut to EWP with a command line parameter for the config to be in a central shared location.

You can push out the MSI as is, then push out via script a customised config to each client.

And the same goes for the above with the portable version but with the option for running it from all from a shared location instead of the client.

JCQ does not allow modifications of the PDF paper to other versions. The interactive paper is set purely to work with reader software and not for actually doing the exam online. It does not work for doing the exam online since once saved it becomes non-interactive document so the only option is to complete the paper and then save final version which is a risky option.

Is there a way when sending out the msi to send out the edited config file as well? Couldn't see any documentation on how to do this.

At the moment no but I can build you one specific to you if you send me over your config.

My solution was to set the deployment up in SCCM as a script, so we have a cmd file that runs the MSI file, then copies over the config file to the local computer.

The exams officer has asked if there is a way when pressing the extra time button it changes straight away? She said it would be much more useful for us as a school like that. Also, on clicking the extra time button at the moment it doesn't appear to actually change the font colour after a minute, not sure why.

I’ve checked the extra time button and it works for me ok, but when you send me over your config, I can test it against the latest EWP version.

 

I will be adding an extra button to start now instead of a countdown for the next version of EWP.

Just so you all know, the next version of EWP will not follow the major,minor,build,revision versioning system. It will now follow the date time versioning system.

 

For example:

EWP currently is v5.1.0.0

Changes to: v[year].[month].[day].[hhmm]

 

Therefore the next scheduled release due on 27th Nov midnight, would be: v21.11.27.0000

 

It just helps me with dating EWP without looking at the file creation date.

 

I’m letting you know because I didn’t want to think I had gone nuts with the version numbers and you had skipped 16 versions from 5 to 21 :-)

Just started using exam write pad, doing a bit of testing. I have got it to deploy fine and look at a config file stored on a shared drive, that all good. I am finding though when I test it with a student account, It opens very slowly and takes a while to get to the data entry screen, then once that has been filled it, I have it save the file straight away, that works fine but the it just going to a blank screen and doesn't actually open a blank document.

 

Has anyone seen this before before I go delving into it.

And also let me know if launching EWP from a local hard drive folder with the config in the same folder is that quicker than launching it from a shared folder/UNC path.

 

Also are you calling the config via the shortcut or command line? If EWP resides in a separate place to the config.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

 

Sure I can create you the video tomorrow but just for info. EWP is installed on the HDD and I'm calling the config via the shortcut. The config file is located in a few sub folders under our netlogon folder. I'll try with a local config file tomorrow.

 

It ran fine with the same setup on our clean machine with an admin account but I don't want to log on as an admin to a machine in the wild for obvious reasons!

 

Will update in the morning.

Did a bit of testing this morning and it seems like my config file was at fault. reset it to defaults and everything worked fine again so I'm working through changing one thing at a time to see if I hit this issue again.

If you find out what the cause is please let me know just in case it’s an issue with the config editor.
