I'm looking at costings to see the viability of creating a new separate network for our CCTV.

 

I've had a quote for about £15k to have all the cameras replaced (53 no.) and to provide a new centrally located network video recorder (NVR), but the price excludes the new network.

 

I've got spare fibre cores to most of my cabinets and have had a quote of about £5k to upgrade a few links.

 

 

I still need to cost up PoE switches to the cabinets where the new cameras will be connected back to - something like a "Netgear ProSafe 8x10/100/1000 SM GB Switch PoE - GS110TP-200EUS" which would give me 8 ports for cameras and the ability to connect to a spare fibre using an SFP module and lead.

 

My issue comes with what I do at my core, potentially I am going to have 10-12 fibre leads and I need to connect them to the NVR.

 

Is the cheapest way to do this with 10-12 media converters - seems very messy!

 

I'm struggling to find a switch that is just SFP modules...

 

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

We don't have a separate network, nor a VLAN for CCTV and don't have any problems. Consider just connecting your cameras to your main network, then look to change to separate cabling infrastructure as required?

I'm all for having your cameras on the same network infrastructure as the rest of your network but I would seriously suggest VLANing them off. Two reasons come to mind:

 

A lot of cameras spit out multicast traffic, you don't want that saturating your main networks

If you have them in their own VLAN, you can add ACLs to that VLAN to help stop unauthorised access to them.

We run ours on our main network, just on their own VLAN. If I was going to run them on a separate network I'd just stick a 24 port fibre module into the core switch (or use up the free ports as I've already got one), but depends on what your core switch is as to whether that's a possibility or not. Ours is chassis based HP 5406 with a free slot.

 

All comes down to how much bandwidth you think they will use, and whether you can sacrifice that on your main network. Our 38 x 3MP cameras don't use anywhere near the amount of bandwidth I'd have guessed (and they're evenly spaced over multiple cabinets) so we don't notice any performance issues.

Same here. Our 'new' CCTV system went in about two years ago. Ticking over nicely, no issues.

Thanks for all the replies so far - food for thought - ultimately we'll be having around 64, 5mp cameras.

We have the capacity for 64, although we have 50 deployed at the moment.

We've just done exactly the same. The cameras are connected to one port on the NVR, and the other port connects to the main network.

 

I'm having speed issues with viewing the images. I changed all the cameras to static IPs a few weeks ago and performance was great. Now though it's worse than ever. Each camera image takes up to half a minute to appear and will freeze. Eventually they'll all appear. This is through a browser. The client is no better. What am I doing wrong?

Chrome ? I had weird stuttering using ubiquiti cameras which I thought was network related. I then discovered that hardware acceleration in chrome needed to be disabled - worked fine after that

Hikvision in IE. It did work fast for a while after I set static IPs on all the cameras, in IE as well as the Hikvision client software, so I don't think it's browser related.

Any other performance related issues on that station?

Behaviour have the same problem on their PC. Good shout though. I'll check.

 

No, no other performance issues on the monitoring PC.

We created a separate network for the CCTV. 78 cameras, HD streaming, spread over 3 NVR’s.

We have netgear pro safes on that network.. and used the spare fibre cores to link.

No problems! I would recommend keeping them off your main network! Security and ease!

Same here on 3 Cisco's fibre linked.

 

I forgot to mention, we also have a leisure centre with the client software left running permanently. Only on 16 cameras, but I wonder if that's causing issues.

I'd be investing in my main network making it more resilient, And add bandwidth that could be more useful all around....because what you are spending could benefit more than just new cameras. So I'd be putting in "trunk" links (LAGs) between core and edge switches....10GB between core switches ..or heavily used ones to computer suites...And I'd be thinking about future (gigabit) wireless use when it comes to PoE...and I'd be using midspan injectors rather that PoE for when you just need a 2 or 3 PoE outlets. I'd prefer to a use a bigger switch with more outlets rather than daisy chain another switch to manage. You can get 8xoutlet injectors provided total output can power your cameras....I tend to buy cheap "Chinese" SFP and SFP+ modules for £10 each...seem to work just fine...well in fact better than fine - the only modules that keep failing are the badged ones....which cost a relative fortune. Yes - I would the CCTV on a VLAN...to isolate multicast traffic and help prevent direct access to the cameras from the main network....and would cost nothing apart from a couple of hours setting it up.
