genesis Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Hi Currently the staff and students dont have access the Home drive and shared drives and they use external harddisk and USB to transport data. I would like to stop this and set up remote file access. Please suggest if you know any free softwrae or paid software(Less expensive) which can don this functionality. Any sugessions and hep much appreciated Thanks in advance.
3s-gtech Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Plenty of options: Direct Access/Always On VPN (for school owned devices) - licensed Remote Apps/RD Web Access - licensed Foldr - paid Home Access Plus - free but limited support now WebDAV - free plus other commercial and open source solutions.
thebatman Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 We use HAP+ (Home Access Plus+) for file access, Free but support is limited and a little flaky. We also use TSPlus for remote desktop access, cant fault it, works on any web browser and very cheap and best of all, it works.
FN-GM Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 I wouldn't use HAP+ - Without an independent security audit we don't know how secure it is. Have you considered something like Google Drive or OneDrive in Office 365?
NB9457 Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 We use Foldr here, works well and support is good, cost isn't substantial either. As mentioned HAP+ support is limited (it is free after all), but it is good, not sure if it has been discontinued though?
kennysarmy Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Another tick for FoldR here - setup & forget...
TwistedHelixis Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 All my primary schools use both Google and remote desktop gateway, both are free.
AlanD Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 We are an RM school, and therefore use their Portico product. Cant help but think the best long term solution is only allow one Drive both in and out of school. Remote Desktop access is known to be very vulnerable to attack from external compromised PCs.
TwistedHelixis Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Rd can be secure. We have it so it can only be accessed from specific domain computers, specific domain users and only if they have a certificate on the machine etc.
FN-GM Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 remote desktop gateway, both are free. Its not free, you have to pay for MS licences as well as VM / hardware for the gateway and servers to run on.
TwistedHelixis Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 If you have old hardware and old server licence then it's just the connect license which is not much but yes it's not free.
FN-GM Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 If you have old hardware and old server licence then it's just the connect license which is not much but yes it's not free. As well as RDS cals you have to purchase.
sister_annex Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 We use this Web based file access to Windows shares for Active Directory users. Not free but very good, easy to configure and works with AD. Also keeps everything on site so no need for cloud services
