Looks great to me.

 

Netflix and Amazon 4K apps built in, plus all the other catch up content available through the tv directly should reduce the need for a dedicated tv box.

Does anyone know if the optical output on the LG's supports true Dolby pass-through or is it downgraded to stereo (like my current TV)? No information online about it..

 

My Onkyo AV amp detects it as a Dolby signal and displays the Dolby indicator light if that helps?

why do they make it so hard to find simple specs?

only 3 hdmi 1 on the back 2 on the side????

LG make some of the screens for Sony but Sony have a better video subsystem (chip and software) which is why if you have a Sony and LG next to each other that have the same screen the Sony will look crisper. Sony seem to win what Hi-Fi far more than LG

To say one brand is better than another is silly. Just like cars, computers and eveything else, there are always stinkers in the lot.

Sony don't make panels, so they are either Samsung or Sharp inside. LGs tend to suffer from LED failure after a couple of years and some Samsung TVs suffer from BGA issues on the mainboard. LG OLED TVs suffer from banding.

Don't buy your TV from a shop that sells toasters that's known for it's poor customer service and support, buy your TV from Richer Sounds where they come with a 5 year warranty and they know their stuff.

 

Depends... Sharp are one of the very names you'll see on a TV that has never seen the inside of a reputable manufacturer, much like some Panasonic and Toshiba, most Hitachi, all Wharfedale, Polaroid and Blaupunkt...

Often get what you pay for.

For this years models the Sony do have the edge on quality but I find the software and GUI menu a bit of a faf.

 

Samsung have also done some fantastic TV's and I find the GUI menu nice and easy.

 

You best bet is to do some real world testing but not at Currys / PC World. Find a really good quality audio video shop like https://www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk where the staff actually know the differences and book in for a demo afternoon. I guarantee you will come away with something that fits what you really want.

Whatever TV you buy turn the backlights down as low as you can to extend their life. LGs seem particularly bad for over driving them.
