Micro Librarian - Finger prints

Hi all,

 

Is anyone using MLS Hosted and successfully found a way to register fingerprints that don't involve making the librarian a local admin to run the registration software?

What're you using for the fingerprint registration? Straight into MLS or some form of middleware (Biostore, for example)?

 

I'd test it using ProcMon and the Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit. The latter can create a deployable "shim" so it works as a regular user.

What happens if you modify the .exe to run as an administrator? Does it then work?

Nope, it asks for admin credentials and elevation.

 

Logon as a local admin, works fine.

We had to add in our exe as a Hash rule in our Software Restrictions Policy. Our exe was easytrace.Devices.IdentityWriter.exe though.

Download the application compatibility toolkit from Microsoft and run it against the .exe to see what it suggests.

Why make them an admin, maybe its just users need to write to the program files directory where it is installed. Try changing permissions there and see what happens.

Hi Folks, I've only just discovered this is a problem after replacing the Win 7 MLS PC for a Win 10 PC.

I've had to resort to creating a local admin login on the library desk PC because the MLS.Biometric.config.exe won't run as a standard user & running it at login as admin makes it a background task so it doesn't work

plus the IE plugin won't run on our RM network due to policy

BTW, our fingerprint reader hooks up to BIOstore's id system

if I do find out if it can run as a standard user, I'll post it here.

p.s I'm hoping Capita reading cloud create a chrome plugin instead & update MLS.Biometric.config.exe to be better suited to restricted environments but I don't see it coming soon.

Hi, we gave up on this ages ago. We no longer take fingerprints for MLS for new users. We might start looking at alternatives soon.

 

Any feedback or fixes you get Jay would be great.

Yeah, same. We kept getting the wrong pupil pop up when a fingerprint was scanned. Whether that was a database error or their fingerprints were too similar, I don't know!

 

Just switched to using pin numbers instead and recently moved to Libresoft, which I would definitely recommend!

I have the same problem as everyone else and thought I'd contact Capita for the official response which is:

 

The official advice is to ensure that the user has full access to the Windows folder, the installation folder and temp folder but a lot of customers have reported that this doesn't resolve the issue. Local admin rights can resolve the issue but this can conflict with site security settings. There's a post on EduGeek where a user has reverse engineered the function and resolved the issue with a proprietary download but I can't, for obvious reasons, recommend this as a solution.

We had so many issues we reverted to pin numbers and TBF it seems to work pretty well
