Renfield-64 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Hi, I am about to buy 5 new PCs for our school and have been quoted on 120GB SATA Solid State Drive 2.5" instead of normal HDDs. Are there any drawbacks to using SSDs over normal HDDs? The storage size is enough. We are currently running all PCs here as 32Bit Windows Enterprise Pro but sometime within the next year we are likely to upgrade to Win 10. Thanks.
DJ-1701 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Personally, I wouldn't want to get anything that is not an SSD now for the Operating System at least. Especially if you are moving to Windows 10 soon.
3s-gtech Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Drawbacks? Honestly, in workstations where local storage isn't often needed, no. They're quicker, quieter, more reliable and flexible. We made the switch to SSD only in 2013 and I have never regretted it. Hugely reduced my maintenance workload.

LeMarchand Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Yep; even my at my schools where money is tight I insist on SSDs in anything new (or refurbed). The only problem we had was in our suite where cached profiles were filling up the disks. Just set a GPO to delete any older than x days and all was fine. The machines only take seconds to create a new profile if necessary.

localzuk Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 SSDs all the way now. Only place I buy HDDs now is for our onsite backup NAS. Our central storage is all SSD too.
DalekSec Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 SSDs are soooo 2016, M.2 NVMe drives are the future now! On a serious note, i agree with what everyone else is saying. SSDs trump HDD in everything bar size. And in a place where size doesn't matter you'd be stupid not get an SSD!

Even in a place where size does matter, I'd still run an SSD alongside a HDD for additional storage

DalekSec Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Yes there is exceptions to the rule, but the majority of PCs that are for enterprise/schools don't have m.2! Well our dell ones we buy that are SFF don't have M.2 and only have the one drive bay! Intel NUCs might have m.2 but the cheaper ones only have tiny CPUs! and not heard of the 14TB SSD thats awesome! ( i use exclamation marks to much! )
