Seems like a nice improvement this time round after the rather uninspired iPhone 7.

 

Good to see the minimum storage is 64gb and the wireless charging should be handy. Plus the usual CPU/GPU bump is always nice.

 

The iPhone X looks rather nice. Admittedly ridiculously expensive but if you're already considering spending £800 on and iPhone 8 plus then it's not a crazy jump for the improved screen and form factor.

 

I'm not sure about the whole face ID though. I'm nervous about it after seeing it fail during the demo on stage which makes me wonder how reliable it will actually be in real world use. Plus I kind of miss the fingerprint reader which is really convenient when you're taking your phone out of a pocket or pressing when it's flat on a desk.

 

I've changed my phone pretty recently and have been sticking with android generally for the last few years so won't be buying one however. Might consider switching back if IOS 11 looks good and the OLED panels hit the 'mainstream' non pro/X models next year.

I think it failed because he didn't unlock the phone prior to use when I saw the video. It was asking for the pin which happens when you boot the phone.

I put the GM of 11 on my phone last night. Pretty nice so far. Seems a little slicker but it's only just got going.

Don't get me wrong. I love the iPhone. It's the only smartphone I've ever owned (unless you count the Nokia N73 and N82 [emoji12]). The trouble with the price tag is even though we've been spending £800 on previous phones, even that has been extortionately high. Now that they've practically broken the £1000 mark, it's only going to get more and more expensive. I don't upgrade every year by any means (only ever owned an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 6 Plus, of which the first 2 were on contract and it's only the 6 Plus that I bought outright) just thinking of paying £1000 even every few years is a tough commitment.

 

My iPhone 6 Plus is now at the 3 year old mark and you can start to notice the 1GB RAM starting to lag. It'll only be a matter of time before it'll stop getting new iOS updates and then you are forced to upgrade. I just looked at the release notes for iOS 11 yesterday and most of the features don't exist on the iPhone 6/Plus.

 

Conversely, I'm sure there are those that will argue that given the immensely high amount of hours in a day that we use our smartphones (I'm typing this on said iPhone 6 Plus right now) £1000 every 2-3 years, or even every year, might not be too bad an investment. Food for thought I guess.

 

As for Face ID. I'm not too worried. Sure, it looked bad failing on Craig, but I've been using the similar Windows Hello with a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 laptop I have at work and it's practically flawless. I'm optimistic. Maybe once we get used to it, we'll wonder why we bothered with the "inconvenience" of having to touch our phone to get it working! [emoji12]

Apple do offer interest free payments (separate from the upgrade program) as well now which is nice. Kinda want my contract separate as all the phone deals with contracts are normally crap.

IOS 11 on my 6+ does feel much better than 10 so far but I used a full restore image to do the upgrade rather than the incremental upgrade (not a restord/wipe an upgrade using the full image)

Apple’s iPhone X is due to be revealed later today, but it’s apparently already started to hit the benchmarks. Shocker: it’s fast. Like, insanely fast.

 

A mysterious ‘iPhone10,5‘ showed up on Geekbench’s catalog today, and assuming it’s not somehow a false entry, it’s posting speeds that are way faster than anything Android’s current generation has to offer: a 4095 on the single core test, and 9959 on the multi-core one.

I suppose the problem for Apple is the smartphone now is getting so smart they can't really add that much more 'wow' to it - That emoji stuff last night a few years ago wouldn't even have been in the keynote, just a minor feature.

 

My 64GB 6 Plus (not 6S) is still going fairly strong, prior to the keynote I could have flogged it for £250 - £300 vs the £700

 

My main gripe with the X is you pay a grand and get a tiny 64GB storage! Should have been 128GB baseline

You're probably right. Even if not I'm sure it's something they can fix in software. Just slightly awkward when it goes wrong in front of a worldwide audience!

 

We're almost at the stage where Apple could release their rumoured ARM-powered MacBook/MacBook Pro running macOS. :eek:

 

It's definitely going to make for some interesting times if/when we start seeing ARM chips powering laptops running MacOS.

You're probably right. Even if not I'm sure it's something they can fix in software.

 

Maybe, but I seem to get that for the fingerprint scanner on my iPad Mini sometimes, even though the Mini has been on and not rebooted.

Too many failed attempts to log in will cause the same problem.

 

I can always tell when my kids have been trying to play games on my ipad mini as i have to put the passcode in again (well that and the grubby handprints all over it)

I'm the only one that uses mine though. My gf knows the pin even if she did want access, and my little woofer isn't interested in it. :)

I saved my thumb print on Mr gee40's iPhone and on his iPad :angel:

 

I got fed up of having to put the code in whenever I had to sort out his most recent technical PICNIC problem :D

I cant believe how much the iphone 10 looks like recent Android phones like the Essential Phone!

 

It's an oblong with a glass screen on the front covering 95% of the surface area. It's pretty hard to make these things look different.

Oblong! Now there's a word that I haven't heard in years! It was even banned at one of my old schools in the past. We had to use the word "rectangle" :D

 

Back on topic... Apple always seem to get trounced for lack of innovation. I'm not exactly sure just how much more they can pack in. Like someone said above, how much "smarter" are we expecting our smartphones to get? A lot of manufacturers are releasing so called flagship phones, but leaving out noticeable flagship features. E.g. Water resistance seems to be the norm for flagships these days, neither the Google Pixel or the very recent Essential phone have that. Samsung gave the Note 8 a smaller battery than the S8 Plus (maybe to avoid further explosions?!) and Apple left out the much touted in-screen Touch ID - perhaps to left Face ID take off and then introduce it as a new feature for the iPhone XI.

 

It's almost like the companies are holding back to ensure they have a "new feature" for next years flagship!

The Plus phones get you a few advantages:

 

Better camera

Higher resolution screen

Landscape and portrait orientation like an iPad

Bigger keyboard

 

Whether you think that's worth the extra money is up to you :)

For me, definitely. I upgraded to a 6 Plus from an iPhone 4, which was daunting for about 5 minutes. I bought my wife an iPhone 6 at the same time. Whenever I use my wife's phone, I definitely find it much smaller and harder to type than on my iPhone 6 Plus. I'd recommend the extra £100. Especially with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The 7 came with 2GB RAM whereas the 7 Plus came with 3GB RAM. So, you're getting more than just extra real estate as the Americans say!

Just heard on the radio that Apple shares have fallen after the event last night.

 

I think the share value fell by something like $4. When your shares are worth something like $160 each, that's not too much to be worried about!
