Be interested to know if it's any speedy logging in, that's my only grip with W10. We rolled it out over the summer to most student devices which can just about handle it and it's been really stable compared with 7. It's just the logging in which takes the time. First login is now only about 20 seconds compared to 35-40 with 1703 and that is with a syspreped image rolled out. Even managed to keep using my default profile from the 1703 build and all works the same, start menu etc etc.

Also tweaked some policies so it skips the welcome animation and switches to desktop quicker. Users have reported that the 1703 machines we rolled out felt faster to boot and login than W7. I got well over a minute closer to 1:30 on the VM and almost 2 on old non ssd hardware. I don't have a default profile but it sounds like I should. Instead of going through the hassle of default profile, can I just copy in some files during OSD? I'll do some more tests today.

Michael Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I can't help but notice that every edition of Windows 10 CB appears to contain more bloatware than usefulware - looking at this whole thread, there's a lot of emphasis on 'how do I remove or disable this'? Should there be an LTSB equivalent for Education; an in-between the existing Enterprise LTSB version? Yes I think so.

I agree this would make sense. I'll be honest, I have been testing LTSB for sometime (way before 1709) and it ticks more boxes, it's more stable and it is faster too. As it currently stands, deploying LTSB today will be valid until 2026, as will Office 2016 also. This also means they'll be approx. 20 more additions of Windows 10 CB before then and now; so how many more Apps and unwanted content will Microsoft include between then and now? The next LTSB/C version will be in 2019, so it will be interesting to see how the 2016 and 2019 version will compare; hopefully very little at the core by logic.

So the question is, why did they create it? The official line is the for likes of ATMs and critical business applications - makes complete sense, an ATM won't benefit from the likes of Cortana or Edge for example. At the same time though, it's unclear why Microsoft think forcing Cortana or Edge on education is what they want, but more to the point upgrading twice per year? I don't know anyone in my profession who's doing this; the disruption to end users is huge and unnecessary. I think maybe Microsoft have forgotten that Windows 7 has/is going to have a 10 year support window, with organisations moving to the Windows 10 on a 6 month model on CB (by default). It doesn't make any sense at all the more I think about it.

Following the Office 365 Proplus model it's constantly updated. This coupled with a move to 1:1 devices is the shift that is happening. Managng a low cost laptop via intune may become the new norm. The quiet depreciation of Roaming Profiles seems to signal this. As always legacy is going to slow this shift. LTSB is more convenient for IT departments but becomes a deal breaker is you want onedrive On Demand sync. It may be easier on licensing budgets to not be on LTSB and VL Office. The upgrade twice a year ideally shouldn't break things. MS need to improve QA and speed of upgrades. So kicking and screaming this may be what MS want if your an Office 365 organisation. However the profile size between default user and a newly logged on user is several MB. The default user profile is about 3MB new test staff login is 40MB and domain admin is 70MB. I ran windirstat on it and a webcache dat file takes up the most of that space at 25MB. Would copping this file in during OSD or using the network default profile speed things up. I do see from your previous post I've missed a few built it apps so I'll add those to my script too.

From what I've read so far a cab file is downloaded at first log in, I assume after the first user is logged it is cached somewhere. This will explain my discrepancies in log in time testing. I've found some guides on removing it per user after login but not per machine. Anyone know how to remove this? Reading the description it looks like I need WindowsTH-RSAT_WS2016-x64.msu as we are running servers 2012r2. Is that correct as I wouldn't want to install the wrong version?
