Well, here we are. There are now 20,000 of you in here, all sharing your knowledge and experience for the greater good. To put this into context here are soem figures for you.
In the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) there are 22,156 primary schools and 4209 secondarys (not including private schools), so my guess is that we pretty much have every single UK secondary on board, and a large chunk of the primarys. And if not, why not?!!
We are now building up our international members with a LOT of US schools and districts joining and a rapid rate of knots, but considering there are 27,468 public high schools in the states we have a way to go
So it's a big thank you to you all for making EduGeek the home away from home that it is, and our current net standing of 44,025 (was in the 43,000's yesterday) shows just how big you have all made it.
Oh, and congrats to Bezwick for guessing the correct date and time to within a few mins as he guessed 09:33. If you can PM me with your details We shall get a rather funky Asus VH22H 22" full HD monitor off to you curtesy of our friends at ICT Direct (ICT Direct - computer hardware for ict in education - primary, secondary, special needs schools and colleges). |

The EduGeek.net Technical Help Point returns to stand G89 for the fourth year at BETT 2010. In addition to helping visitors match their technical needs with exhibitors at BETT and answering their technical questions, we will also have a wide range of information and best practices for technical support staff, such as Green IT and Virtualisation.
Visitors also have the chance to download or take away the latest versions of our free products that help educational IT support professionals with their job.
This year, we have new initiatives such as our proof of concept 'server- room-in-a-box', a lightweight & fully functioning portable schools network, and also our new software EduMove
The ‘server-room-in-a-box’ is completely composed of items bought off-the-shelf, and has many possibilities. The solution contains all the components to run a modern network, including a Smoothwall (*see below) combined firewall and web filter, and Ruckus (** see below) managed wireless system. This solution is ideal for where space is limited, such as Primary Schools who do not have the luxury of a full server room.
Our EduMove software has been designed for EduGeek.net in association with OP Software.(*** see below) It facilitates IT support staff migrate files from one server to another, and as well as migrating the files, it updates the user’s home path in Active Directory and preserves folder permissions.

9 Replies | | | Edugeek @ NetworkSi - Conference | |
Oct 08, 2009 - 10:12 PM - by EduTech |
Evening all,
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at NetworkSi for inviting me to a conference they held today at their offices in Birmingham.
The Morning went very well and I found the day to be very productive indeed, the main focus at the conference was "Parental Access" and this is one of the main things that Secondary Schools need to make sure they have in place by September 2010. NetworkSi and Novotronix are building a partnership to deliver SharePoint solutions to the Education and Business. With NetworkSi's Advanced Project Management skills and Novotronix Advanced SharePoint knowledge this seems like it is going to be very successful indeed and already they have helped many schools around the UK implement a SharePoint solution(s).
As I say the main focus on the event was Parental Access, we had a presentation from Alex Pearce (MVP) about what people should be doing when planning to build a SharePoint Portal but also the best way to go about providing parental access.
One point that was made is that people should not be thinking that parental access means just giving parents access to their students grades etc it should also be to get them involved with the school provide them with information.. Courses the school may off and any services in the local area but to also provide parents with information about their children throughout the year through reports. If schools report on students and the parents can view this content then they will be able to work with the school to sort out any problems if they should arise but to also help the parents encourage their students throughout the academic year there is no point providing the parents with this information at the end of the school year @ parents evenings because it has already been done and it could possibly... Oct 06, 2009 - 4:15 PM - by ZeroHour |
We have been contacted by Microsoft regarding the hotmail passwords list and they have asked us to post the following info to you in case its needed by anyone who has been hacked etc and as a general fyi. Quote:
We are aware that some Windows Live Hotmail customers credentials were acquired illegally by a phishing scheme and exposed on a website. Upon learning of the issue, we immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation. As part of that investigation, we determined that this is not a breach of any Microsoft servers. Subsequently we are taking measures to block access to all of the accounts that were exposed and have resources in place to help those users reclaim their accounts.
If users believe their information was documented on the illegal list, users should fill out the following form to reclaim access to their account. Phishing is an industry-wide problem and Microsoft is committed to helping consumers have a safe, secure and positive online experience. General information on what to do if you believe you have been victimized via a phishing scam is available on this page at our support community. Additional Points

Sep 22, 2009 - 11:07 PM - by Dos_Box |
You may have noticed something new on the site today(look in the top right-hand side, below your profile box). This is our new service in partnership with E-Qoute Central, a company which specialises in online quotes - they were previously responsible for School Quote.
The system we have partnered with allows you to post your requirements in total anonymity and have the UK's largest online retailers provide quotes direct to you. Only once you have initiated contact with a bidder is your identity revealed. These quotes also count as your 3 quotes for large orders!
As the system is now something we have created you will have to sign up, a relatively painless procedure which will involve BuyFocus contacting you via phone to confirm that you are indeed a school (education discounts etc), and not a private company trying to get discounts. Once on the system you should find it quite straight forward to use.
To assist you in getting to grips with this system we have created an EduGeek-Buy forum in the Purchasing and Trading section and have Sam from BuyFocus monitoring the forum all day to answer any queries you may have.
Points to note:
1. The minimum quote time is 5 days, as of yet there is no option for urgent quotes (48 hrs or less notice). This is being worked on at our request.
2. You can view any quotes that another member has been offered and if you see a particularly good deal you too can have it for that price if you order within a 1 week period of the original quote being offered.
3. Please use the EduGeek-Buy portal and NOT School Quote or the default BuyFocus site as you will not get the educational discount or be recognised as an EduGeek member. If you always browse to www.edugeekbuy.net you should have no problems.
4. Let us know what you think and what features you would... [Read More] |
