Microsoft has used the IFA conference in Berlin to announce the next big update for Windows 10 users – the Fall Creators Update will be released on October 17.

 

No doubt it will be later for us on the 'Volume Licensing Service Center' (VLSC) though.

Hardly any worthwhile updates really other than the onedrive symlink feature which is nice.

 

Where are the cool features like a tabbed explorer, standardized settings menu or quicker file copies/deletes after the regressions of windows 10?

 

They seem to be concentrating on the wrong things in my opinion.

As we previously announced, will be available worldwide on 17th October 2017. For IT organizations, that means that Windows 10, version 1709 will be available on the 17th on all relevant distribution channels: the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), Windows Update for Business, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Visual Studio Subscriptions. The updated Windows ADK for Windows 10 will also be available by that date.

 

You might notice that there have been some packaging changes with volume licensing media and upgrade packages with Windows 10, version 1709. Now, instead of having separate media and packages for Windows 10 Pro (volume licensing version), Windows 10 Enterprise, and Windows 10 Education, all three will be bundled together.

 

For ISOs that you download from the VLSC or Visual Studio Subscriptions, you will still be able to search for the individual Windows editions. Just note that each of the editions (Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education) will point to the exact same ISO, so you only need to download the ISO once. Included in the ISO will be a single Windows image (WIM) file that contains all the volume licensing images:

When using the contents of these ISOs with tools such as the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit or System Center Configuration Manager, make sure you select the appropriate image index in any task sequences that you create or update.

I'm glad to hear that, I'm hoping 1709 will address a driver issue I've been having.

 

How much time will this add to deployment? I'd think the wim will be much larger this time around?

The 1709 x64 en-GB install.wim that contains Windows 10 S, Home, Home SL, Education, Pro and the 'n' versions of each is only about 4GB (or ~7.7GB when decompressed).

1709 is a game-changer for Office 365 enabled organisations. We've needed the placeholder functionality for years and the Drive Mapper scripts never really cut the mustard performance or reliability-wise (WebDAV is a horrible protocol).

 

Waiting for the VLSC download so I can slot the new version straight into MDT, imagine the only change required will be on the Remove Apps script as I noticed some more cruft being installed by default.

The O365 Exchange Admin Portal is the same, uselessly slow early morning then speeds up when the US wake up

Microsoft usually provide these updates later in the day, as today is meant to be the deployment day, I would assume sometime after 5pm our time, but hopefully sooner.
