FN-GM Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 (edited) I think hardware wise Samsung phones are great, having seen and played with an S8 today I was impressed. However I think they have ruined it by what they do to Android. I don't like the UI and why have they made their own apps to place the superior Google equivalents? IMO it would be much better if it was near stock as possible and use the time they save to release more frequent software updates. I wouldn't have one just because of the software. Does anyone else agree or is it just me? Edited August 17, 2017 by FN-GM 1
ADMaster Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I've only ever owned Samsung phones, so I cannot really compare. I do use the google apps over the Samsung ones too. The clock for example, with the Google one I can snooze with the volume button, not so with the Samsung.
caffrey Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 I prefer stock android, which is why I only consider phones from Google and you also get updates monthly.
sted Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 (edited) and their update "policy" isnt great. i think google need 2 versions of android for phones one oems MUST keep up to date in a timely fashion (how many new phones still arnt on 7)for x years AND be stock and one they can mess with Edited August 18, 2017 by sted
difinity Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 If it's software and it's Samsung, chances are it's janky. Kies, their printer software and their CCTV camera software all spring to mind.
just_david Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 the crap oem's put on their phones, and their godaweful update delays, is 90% of the reason I use iOS. I remember going to get a S6 while it was still the flagship, and it still didn't have the latest android OS (my nexus 5 was on 6 by then i think, all the samsungs were still on 5.1) Given how much banking etc i now do on my mobile, I can't think of anything more important than the security and timely updates.

Does anyone else agree or is it just me? I agree wholeheartedly, its why I used to get frustrated with Android and the bloat, my sister had massive problems with her S2 and the S4 she upgraded too at the time because she used the Samsung Apps, for some reason I cannot fathom, despite me telling her not to, she used that junk for her business contacts and calendar and it just wouldnt copy from her old phone to new, even using the "inbuilt" transfer feature. I think she had to waste a weekend then manually copying everything to google.
bossman Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Both techies here have gone down the S8 route and as a phone i don't blame them as they had the best OP phones to date bar the last one OP5 which they wouldn't purchase because of the cost and that the OnePlus company had sold out in their words. I still have the OP3 but I'm very impressed with the Galaxy S8 in quality of the hardware but as for the usual bloat...............I'm not!
cpjitservices Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 (edited) I am having a weird issue with my phone, Samsung Galaxy S6, Latest version of Droid. Its the Facebook app (yes I know... its un-important), I use Facebook for business use and the really annoying thing it does is - I see posts from people, if I comment I just get the "posting" and it never really posts. also if I try to post in my groups I can create a post add pics or whatever but when I click post it sends me back to my main Facebook page (timeline?). If I reboot my phone, everything goes back to normal then sporadically it will fail again Very Very annoying!!!! Have tried factory reset to no avail. mtillbrook Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 It's one of those annoying things. I had a Samsung for over 6 years (S2 then an S4 then an S6) but decided, mainly due to the price but also for the ability to have dual SIM, to go for a Oneplus 3T (bought it just about two weeks before they annouced the 5!). The difference with the speed at which Andriod runs is suprising as is the amount that Samsung used to take over the OS on thier phones. I didn't realise it before as I was so used to it! I have to say, i love my Oneplus 3T - granted, it doesn't have as many gimiks as the Samsungs do (obviously i'm managing to live without the heart rate monitor!) but its a great phone. I can't believe it took me well over 10 years of carrying around two handsets with me to realise how much easier and better it is to have one handset with dual SIM cards!
soapyfish Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 I have tried many phones over the years not all brand new, but once I found pure android I never looked back. The software Samsung overlay over android really ruin it and make the hardware feel like its already old. and iPhone well don't even start me on iPhone... iPhone 3Gs, S2, S4, Original Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, Pixel XL

Yeah, I have the S6 and im getting bombareded with notiifcations about Samsung Pay and it wont go away!! Annoying.

Google used to have 'Google Play editions' of various high end phones which were stock Android but they killed that off before the Nexus 6 was out.

Arthur Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Apparently the Beta program is full Not a problem on Android... https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/facebook/? Alternatively you could give Simple or Metal a try. Both of them are wrappers around the web app and may solve your issue (in addition to using less battery). 1

Domino Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 I've had previous Galaxys, and now have an S8plus, and can say it's definitely the best they've put out with regards to OS customization. It's less intrusive than previous versions, on older galaxy models I'd usually install a third party launcher, but I've not felt the need to do it yet. Most of the third party stuff can be ignored or replaced, it's only really the settings that remains changed, and they've not gone too overboard with that this time. Having gone from a Nexus 6P to this I'm not feeling the "interface whiplash" you'd get with older samsungs.
synaesthesia Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 Can't stand the crap they load on them, but then again similar to OEM installs on laptops and the likes. At least we usually image those by default It's one of the reasons I love my OP3 so much, although I found one comment earlier funny - "techy bought an S8 because of the cost of a OP5..." Would have waited for stock personally, despite some of the issues they have. I don't see me changing from my OP3 for quite a while yet though.
Garacesh Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 (edited) All phone manufacturers ruin their phones with their bloat, be that software, O/S tweaks or UI overhauls. When I bought my S7 Edge, I did my typical day-one-warranty-void of flashing new firmware on. It's basically standard procedure for me at this point. That being said, if you don't want to muck about with rooting and flashing, you can always download a new launcher through Google Play. I personally would recommend Nova Launcher. Had an Uber advert come up on my phone out of nowhere the other day on me, if it wasn't for the range of specific Apps on Android I'd go back to Apple in a heartbeat, never liked the OS personally but the usefull Third Party Apps available blow apple out of the water.
flyinghaggis Posted August 24, 2017 Posted August 24, 2017 (edited) I pretty much agree with the OP entirely. Personally I think Samsung actually loathe the fact they need to put Android as an OS on their phones at are still hacked off that their own attempt at an OS (Bada) bombed! I think you can see this from the fact that they've reskinned Android so heavily and are desperate to replace all of the stock Google apps with their inferior own versions which tie into their own web services and platforms. I get the impression Samsung wishes it could be Apple and have full control over both the OS and hardware ! Edited August 24, 2017 by flyinghaggis
