A final update for the day.

Mail held on the filter over the weekend is now released and is reaching mailboxes. Legacy email is presently being transfered but will take several days to process, it is still planned for completion for by Tuesday 25th.

Outstanding issues need to be passed to the Synetrix helpdesk.

Thanks to Kim and Vik for fault finding throughout the day, and thanks to all for their patience.

Aye, mail has arrived, I think we're up to date now :)

Notes / Observations:

* Upon opening, Outlook wants one to accept an unsigned certificate before allowing send/receive. (Synetrix are aware)

* Occasional POP3 timeout in Outlook (putting this down to running thru the fujitsu proxy along with the other 'slow' internet access issues we have).

* Couple of DLLs want registering when users log into the platform, names.dll and something else which tries to talk to MS Office (different to enable).

* Support seem to be picking the ball up now which is pleasing.

ditto the above.

backlog of email through and running smoothly, and most users have all folders and contacts transferred as well.

bit of a pain not seeing other folders when looking at inbox through portal. have got option to click on OWA link at bottom, but you can modify the webpart to show folders anyway:

if you edit / modify the webpart for the inbox, and from the link location remove the "cmd=contents&" parameter/value pair, that will show all folders down the left hand side.

i've logged this as a change i'd like for my whole site, if they can't do it then i'll do a little video for our users.

If you have any problems with distribution lists missing people out etc, whilst logging it with Synetrix, if like us you needed action quicker, you can use EMF to write a rule for if mail to test@ copy to test1@, test2@ etc.

Don't forget to remove the rule after the DLs are sorted. Also note that this applies to schools using the Exchange system provided by Synetrix, not if you run your own in-house box (which you can obviously sort yourself anyway!)

Thanks for that Vik, I showed my wife the full OWA and she is far happier with that than just the inbox. She is even looking at the calendar setup too.

Cool, i'll get in touch with your wife if i may and change the webpart so it always opens in full OWA mode but still within the portal.

One new thing i noted today was that the inbox is still limited to 50MB and there was a message saying that at the point of reaching 45MB or was it 47MB no more mail could be sent.

So still need to do some training to get users to file their attachments properly and purge old mails every few weeks.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with receiving emails outside of their school domain since the switch over last weekend?

I have had a number of users report this (including myself).

Yep, we're having the same problems with our in-school server.

Can send & receive fine internally and send externally but can't receive external mails. Synetrix are currently looking into it for us.

More information for Northants schools.

Dear Headteacher

embc are scheduled to change the physical broadband network connectivity for all 8 Local Authorities from Fujitsu to Synetrix over the Easter weekend between Thursday 20th March from 21.00 hours to 07.00 hours on Tuesday 25th March.

The scope of the change means that the whole of the network may be subject to intermittent availability during that time. This includes access to all embc portal services, mailboxes, internet etc.

Hopefully, because of the timing schools will not be inconvenienced, but the wide-ranging scope of the work and the variables of all the activities involved means embc cannot guarantee the service to be available for any specific times or durations during this period.

Should you experience any issues with your connectivity on Tuesday then, as advised previously, please contact the Synetrix service desk on 08000 740 474.

And

If your site has portal control of filtering you must continue to login via the old Community Gateway first and then navigate to the login page for the new synetrix service. This is to ensure you are allocated the correct filtering level and can still access allowed internet sites. This is a temporary measure until the network switchover has taken place. This is due to happen over the coming Easter weekend and will result in service interuptions from 9pm Thursday 20th march to 7.00am Tuesday 25th March. The new Netsweeper filtering will be in place by the morning of Tuesday 25th March. From then on you will be able to login directly from the new synetrix service with the correct filtering levels. We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

If I get anything else I will pass it on in the morning, but I am now off to bed.

More information for Northants Schools

From today, websites that have not already been moved to the new embc-Synetrix service will now be unavailable over the Easter weekend. Temporary arrangements have been put in place for these sites to be made available following the Easter break for a short period of time, to extend the period given to schools to move them to the new embc/Synetrix service to the end of April.

The network Switchover is still underway at the moment.

This message was paced on the LA and embc Portals on Thursday afternoon

The website servers are also undergoing a 'lift and Shift'. They have been moved from Fujitsu to the Synetrix farm server and are due to be brought back online on by Wednesday.

This message was received from Synetrix at 11.30pm last night

School websites - currently still have a target of wed morning to re-enable legacy webservers. All servers have now been brought across to the Synetrix CSF and work will commence on tues morning to bring these back live.

We are using our own web server in-house which has an external IP assigned by the EMBC. Our domain name (latimer.org.uk) is also tagged by EMBC and a domain whois today suggests that this has now gone over to Synetrix:

Name servers:

ns1.embc.uk.com

ns2.embc.uk.com

We also have our own Exchange 2003 box which has is setup to smart host to EMBC. At the moment I can't get on to this either. I read somewhere that the external IP's will not be changing until summer.

Our website at the moment is unavailabe as is our exchange server so I am guessing this is due to the weekend maintenance.

Will I need to change the smart host in exchange 2003, if so can anybody tell me what it needs to change to... and when?!

Cheers.

Part of the transition this weekend also includes the migration of firewall rules, including the NAT required for external to internal access. This is doubly difficult as the NAT is being done for the old IPs (to continue the existing service) as well as the new IPs (so that schools can move to the new IPs in phases ... but EMBC will pass the details to the LAs of the old > new IPs ... if we have this for the next IT Managers' Meeting we will start passing them on then).

The updates from transition work are coming in late each night and karend has been updating the information as we get it (ok ... I'll admit it ... I buggered off for the weekend).

If we get updated timescales sooner we will post them, otherwise the next update will be tomorrow morning.
