Plain old port 110 is your problem. It _MUST_ be 995 SSL now.

First line don't appear to have access to hand out passwords/usernames.

our Citrix portal and logmein connections are both broken since Thursday - any ideas anyone?

That'll probably be a result of the changes they've been making to the network.

Log a call with Synetrix.

Why have they done this, I was quite happy with it as it was, mainly because it was working:D. I've changed the port to 995 and same problem.

The mail server I'm trying to connect to is not embc's pop server but an outside one. Cannot telnet on either port.

Any other ideas, perhaps it's been filtered?

If you're relaying OUTBOUND via smtp.embc.uk.com you will need credentials.

In the smart host section of the connectors tab in exchange 2003 we just have "forward all mail trhrough this connector to the following smart hosts: smtp.embc.uk.com". There is no area for credentials. It all worked before thursday evening fine.

Basically we dont use the silly .northants.sch.uk domain at all, (took some arguing with Brenda Scoble about two years ago to get this! So for instance I am [email protected], but I have no portal login and no .northants.sch.uk email account either. The same goes for all 1200 of our students and staff.

We are receiving emails fine, however sending is saying that we are not authenticated.

I have just logged a call with Synetrix, the guy on the phone said it was probably something at their end.

Sorry I misinterpretted, I thought you were using EMBC's POP3. - In which case, ignore me.

Yes, filtered sounds likely. - Try logging into the portal on the server AND then try as this should fix protocol level filtering ... (Or used to...)

Ah.... sounds like relay.embc.uk.com will fix it in that case.

Yep - I really should have read the docs first! Not having a portal account kind of makes that a bit difficult though :p

Changing the relay to relay.embc.uk.com has worked for us. Now I just need to get Synetrix to point http://www.latimer.org.uk to our internal web server again! Happy days!

my old webview password will not work with the new portal so I can't logon to check protocol level filtering, and synetrix can't give us a password.

Phoned .ICT and they say that most schools in northants have no email. I don't know how true that is because some of yous seem to be getting on.

.ICT can't and won't help you I'm afraid, its got to be Synetrix or the kind souls on here (IE. Tony and Karen).

Have you called Synetrix back and stressed the importance that access be restored sharpish? - I found that once I emphasised the importance, they become more understanding.

May also be worth PM'ing someone the mail server address you're trying to use so we can try it from our site just incase...

A slightly mixed message there ...

Ok, a quick update and thanks to Kim for holding the fort whilst I have been dealing with things within my own school.

The problems with email at the moment are centred around access to the secure email solution (head@.northants-ecl.gov.uk) which is generally accessed over the admin portion of the school network (the 172. subnets). This is a general connectivity issue within Northants for the admin VPN and is being worked on at the moment, by both Synetrix and the County Information Services team. There is a workaround for schools

There are no generic issues reported with access to Synetrix provided email (ie the replacement for Mirapoint) or for schools correctly using the store and forward filters (please see the transition docs available at the URL that Kim mentioned earlier for what constitutes 'correctly using')

Any individual schools who have issues with routing to in-house services from outside of the EMBC need to report the issue directly to the helpdesk who will process it in priority and call order.

To make life as easy as possible please check that you have done the following things before calling about connectivity issues. Ensure you have changed your DNS to the new name servers. Ensure that you are using the the proxy on port 80 (we got caught out by using 8080). Due to DNS spoofing you do not have to change the proxy to the new one at this time ... it helps if you do, but it will not break things if you don't. For in-house mail, please make sure you are routing emails in and out via relay.embc.uk.com. To check your filter logs or change settings you can go to emf.embc.uk.com. To check you web filter logs and setting you need to have local control of filtering enabled prior to transition or request it of Synetrix (but it may be regarded as low priority compared to other requests going through atm).

You can check ongoing calls by going to http://www.talk2synetrix and logging in with your webadmin username and password, for most schools the username would be your site ID (eg NHS666). To check this, again a call to the helpdesk is needed.

I still can't access any of our servers which should be accessible externally so either they've been switched off or something else is wrong.

I can't get into any of the portal pages because the webview password we did have is not working and if I request a new password they want to email it which is why I need the password in the first place, because we cannot email.

:(

Tell them you want the password over the phone and they will do so. (I locked myself out of mine over the migration weekend and got it within 30 mins of whinging on the Monday).

I've answered your PM btw, mail connects OK from both inside my site, and outside. - Suggest trying telnet to eliminate EFS.

HTH.

For your information this arrived from Synetrix late last night.

'Work was completed today to re-enable the old FJ webservers in the Synetrix data centre. The servers have been re-located with existing passwords and content, no changes were made to the FJ webservers themselves.

As you're aware, this is existing and un-supported legacy hardware, so we would recommend that your schools now complete the migration as soon as possible to avoid any medium term risk. There will be a final cut off point (specific date TBC) where we will plan to de-commission these servers as this lift & shift operation is out of scope of the original transition plan.'

Basically if your website was hosted on the embc fujitsu servers and you have not migrated it to the new Synetrix servers you need to do this ASAP

We have some staff who use POP3 email with RM Plc. The POP3 server is mail.rmplc.co.uk port 110. This POP3 server does not support SSL port 995 so it has to remain as 110.

This is currently not working (being blocked I think.) Is this something that I need to wait to be fixed, or will it be a job to log with Synetrix?

Cheers.

Looks like you have exactly the same problem as me. Kmount tried it for me and he could connect via telnet to it. I can't connect via telnet so we'll have to get back onto synetrix, maybe the 2 of us together can get them to sort it.

Posted

Yea I am trying to get through to them as we speak. I can't get anybody to pick up the phone at the moment! It's quite critical too, as the head uses it and it's the main contact email address that is printed on our website and all our headed letters!

As a side - our url http://www.latimer.org.uk still doesn't point to our internal web server either!

Posted

Indeed, it should be noted that the 995 is only for the EMBC mail.

I can connect to rm's mail server both from inside the site and out, sounds like we should elaborate on our site configs maybe...

We use Local Control Filtering with the 'default' site level filtering as Group 1 (basically level2). - Our staff (some) then have a portal account to escalate to Group 2 (basically Level1a).

In netsweeper, there's a protocol panel which might be worth an investigation....

Hi Kim

We have an unrestricted group that we setup ourselves in NetSweeper that basically has the blacklist setting, with everything unticked. We use that for myself and Aaron, assigning it to only our two static IP machines.

We have tried contacting the RMPLC email server from one of these machines, but it is still not connecting.

Regarding this problem, and our url http://www.latimer.org.uk... I have at last got through to Synetrix who have told me that it is a firewall problem and will need to be escalated to "affinity" for them to look at.

Posted

Ah, affiniti are normally pretty good, just make sure you ask for the name and number of the person who calls you as its (in my opinion) never a first time fix.

Seems interesting that we can get to it no problem but you and the other chap can't .... - Maybe we're speshal :)

Synetrix have told me that there is a problem in northants for email receiving and sending and that it will be sorted by lunchtime and only to call back after then if we still have a problem. I'm not sure if we are just being fobbed off.

and I cannot get into the portal site still, I've been told that webview usernames i.e. those starting with NHS are not the correct usernames. They will create me a portal username but only after april 1st. I did think that the protal only gave me access to documents but if it's filtering and that too then I really think I need it before April 1st as it may be filtering thats stopping us receiving email.
