We're doing a rip and replace on our MERU system over the Summer so it got me thinking about our current AP naming convention which is:

Character 1 = Block identifier

Character 2 = unique number

dash

Character 3 = Cabinet identifier

Character 4/5/6 = Network Patch Number

eg.

81-F149

What do others do?

I'm wondering about simplifiying it to just the lest 4 character so 81-F149 would just become F149 - this would tell us the WAP is patched in to cabinet F patch port 149 - if needs be we'd have drawings to refer to to identify it's exact location.

Not all our AP's are in rooms otherwise I'd reference them, some are on landings, corridors etc.

We just number ours sequentially (e.g. WAP-001, WAP-002, etc.) because so many are not in rooms, and it's nice to be able to reposition them without having to then rename things in DHCP, NPS, etc. Their locations are documented in our inventory, and the network switches and ports that they're patched into are documented in RackTables.

Ours are by school id, that they are an AP, and a unique number.

Eg MMS-AP-015.

The details of where they are etc are in our wireless controller and floor patching databases already.

No real convention here as we're only running 32, so not hard to manage, particularly with Meraki. For the more packed areas I tend to go with [block][Floor][Location].

I like making life easy for future-me, so e.g.: D-Art-2.25-1.44-A1 means:

D - Drury site

Art - The cabinet in the Art block

2.25 - Patch panel 2, port 25 connects to

1.44 - Switch 1, port 44

A1 - The actual AP is in room A1

I like the idea of including which switch port :D

We've already colour coded our cabinet patch leads to quickly determine what is what - but this will also help.

Cheers
