what do you think to these utils ?

I know there are lots of other ones such as VNC ( whatever version ie tight vnc, real vnc, etc etc ) as well as terminal services and many more I am sure.

 

Anyway to my question :

 

Just wanted to see what you guys / gals reckon to dameware utils / mini remote and what they have to offer basically ??

Also any chance you could test dameware utils out on your home lan or the test lan ( Just I am really curious to see what potential they have and what they can do because Ive heard a lot of good things about them )

I downloaded the evaluation version a while ago. While I'm sure they're fantastic if you're running NT4 servers, I didn't see much in there which couldn't be recreated using a standard Microsoft Management Console. However that was about a year ago, things may have changed since then

Yeah- I tried DameWare out a while ago when you first mentioned it. I didn't think it was anything special really- sorry.

 

I still prefer the one I mentioned above.

When the old network manager was working at our school there were all sorts of problems on the network. Mainly to do with roaming profiles being set up wrong and crippling the network.

 

We had an external company come in to evaluate the network and one of the things that they found was that Dameware was eating 20% of the processor power on our PDC.

 

I'd advise against it and stick with mstsc /console -v "machine name"

We use dameware here in Sunbury college and by far the best tool ever. You can watch kids play games lock there keyboard. Very good tool.

We've been using Dameware over the WAN for 2+ years without major problems. I think mstsc is better for remote control, but dameware utililities let us fix a lot of things without starting a full remote control session. And we haven't found problems with the remote client eating up processor power either. If we did, we could set the client service to manual startup, so that it only runs when we actually need it.

Another advantage is that the client installs itself from scratch remotely when we connect, where other RC clients need to be set up first, including terminal services on W2k.

No client costs either making it a cheap solution for remote control, used it some years back but I do not like the new interface / browser system it now uses, this I find a bit awkward to use.

Dameware was the hacking tool of choice for hacking NTPass exploits (wasnt really an exploit, just ID 10 T users) and come in useful for other stuff after comprimising a box. Alot of virus programs pick up hexed versions of dameware as a hacktool because of this.
