Dos_Box Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I found this article on the BBC News site very interesting: How the 'better burger' is taking over the world - BBC News I have to admit to being disappointed by some so-called high end burgers, this includes ones like McDonalds Signature burgers which I find dry and not very tasy to those from various custom burger restaurants that often smother their burgers to hide just how poor the meat is to just plain tasteless meat in plain versions. Sadly though, as I live in the provinces the only places like 5 Guys are 30 miles away in Manchester and Liverpool In contrast, in the US there are plenty of small places that make their own burgers to a very high quality in almost all towns and cities. It would be nice to see this taking on over here too. Does anyone have any decent non-chain burger places in their town? We have a Solita here in Preston (small chain admittedly) but it's a restaurant and does not do take out sadly.
pooley Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I make my own, can never get a good burger out at a resturaunt. And the only time I had one from 5 guys it was just an expensive mcdonalds option, imo

BOOT Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 My local has a very nice bbq bacon and cheese burger. Though the menu does have the word 'SLAW!!' pasted just about every other word -not a fan. ...So hungy now.

No, I just want a burger that is tasty, juicy and not smothered in rubbish (cheese excepted). Maybe some mushrooms and onions too.

just_david Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 5 guys burgers are terrible. its just a tarted up McD's I know they're still a chain, but I freekin love the TGIF burgers. They are the best burgers I've ever had. I'm sat here drooling right now just thinging about one now. damn you >.>
ChickenDhansak Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) The Cowshed in Scarborough - ok burgers but expensive. Decent selection, small portions, tasty sweet potato fries. The Fox Hound Pub at Flixton Near Scarborough - excellent gourmet style burgers that really fill you up - good choice of toppings/varieties (Personal favourite is the Chichen Itza, stuffed with Guacamole, salsa, jalapenos, a few nachos and sour cream (possibly an onion ring too)) - home made chips and what seems like 2lb of coleslaw accompany these beasts. sted Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 handmade burger co are quite nice not the biggest though. best ive had recently was wherever it was in manchester (and their one traffic system makes leeds look well planned and understandable lol either that or google maps sucks worse than i remembered as car sat nav denied all knowledge of the postcode). Id hoped 5 guys would be good as theres one opening soon at the white rose which i go past often as not on the way home. ive actally come to the conclusion youre as well off buying decent burgers etc and doing it at home at least that way you can put whatever rubbish you want in em and have decent cheese rather than kraft slices (though i do like them in burgers i will admit its barely cheese)

We went for an IT department outing a few weeks ago, I was so impressed I'm taking the family there next week, this time I am going to double stack my burger.

Norphy Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Byron Burgers aren't bad but their milkshakes are excellent. GBK can be very variable, depending on the restaurant you go to. Five Guys are an exercise in mediocrity IME although their fries are quite nice, if very salty. The best burgers I've had recently have been in gastropubs.

Since the Conti owners bought it out, they've refined the beer and music nicely and added the smokehouse. It's really tasty stuff! Also GlastonFerret on 7th & 8th June will have an epic BBQ and they'll fully turf the inside of the pub! 1

Kenji Lopez Alt has a good series on preparing and cooking burgers at home, including deconstructions and recipes for building your own improved versions of commercial burgers (for example, his article on making your own improved Big Mac is interesting). My partner can't eat beef so I never have anything with beef at home very often at all, but we are getting quite good at lamb burgers and other alternatives. 1

unixman_again Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Move to Australia - every chip shop will cook you a burger or steak sandwich. You'll get freshly cooked chips too rather than like here in Blighty where they've been sitting for god knows how long. You can also go into almost any deli and buy a hot pie, pastie or sausage roll. These aren't microwaved either.
