Yeah thats what I realised, it will still work but it will have bigger issues when dev's dont release non 64bit apps. Its just one of these things, it probably grates more because tbh it still works quite well. I do have to say the newer ipads are noticeably better though as they have multitasking for one.

I know it will be painful for quite a few schools especially as some have bought the tablets after the Air came out for an extra discount so they may have bought a large batch more recently.

psydii Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 It is unfortunately one of those things that makes you realise paying attention to what is inside these boxes matters. If your ipad4 is from 2012, then you had a good run. But once the 64bit devices appeared it was clear that at some point that is going to be a cut-off in future upgrades (happened with Core vs Core2 iMacs, and virtualisation capabilities in the MacPro line) Similar will happen for devices with less than 2GB RAM, 32Gb Storage, etc etc. (I recently kitted out a family member with a 5c and didn't give the CPU a second thought. More fool me.)

GrumbleDook Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 We get asked about support for iOS 8 devices that haven't been moved up to 9 because of performance issues ... so we all know schools are going to keep running iOS 10 devices for some time. 5 years is not bad for most tablet devices, and I'll be disappointed that it can't take 11 too ... wondering what to do with the family one now.

You could get it framed and mount it on the wall? with a little creative cabling you could use it as an interactive photo frame maybe. 1
synaesthesia Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 (edited) This would boil my urine a bit more if education software on them was being made to work only with those versions but until that happens there's little reason to worry, even though I do still manage a large number of iPad 2's around a couple of schools. Generally those get put down for use for early years, so security updates and the ability to run the latest GarageBand or iMovie isn't high on priority. It's no secret that I've never liked Apple and their forced obsolescence (not talking about this particular issue here) but we need to remain realistic. Can't compare the Surface RT's though - whilst they were a direct like-for-like competitor to the iPad they were literally half the price for schools. Shame the whole idea flunked so badly Same price point would have bagged the surface pro's though which were way in advance of anything fruit branded. Except maybe blackberry phones. Nothing beats good old fashioned keys on a phone... Edited June 7, 2017 by synaesthesia
