I need to buy a laptop for our principal

 

She does not want a big laptop but need it to be lightweight and fast enough for general office work.

SSD

good battery life also.

 

 

any recommendations of good well tested equipment.

just need something that will work and not cause me any headaches not the biggest budget but im sure I can get something decent for that

I was going to recommend a VeryPC G2 Ultrabook but they don't seem to have them on their website anymore.

I've got an i5 one with SSD and its stupidly fast, very small and sleek and was £466. Give @VeryPC_Colin_M a shout - he'll sort you something good out. :)

Consider a refurbished ex-corporate Lenovo T series Thinkpad. Built like tanks and easily serviceable. Cheap as chips too, so plenty of wiggle room for a new battery/more RAM if you desire.

 

Check out ICT-Direct too for more options if you're happy with refurb kit.

VeryPC Thinkbook 14's are quite nice - not got the latest ones, but one of our schools has them on a lease for staff, and they really like them

Lenovo X260/270 - probably over budget, but great pieces of kit, and has a dual battery option so if they travel a lot, then it would be ideal.

Lenovo ThinkPad - Not sure if they make lower end small ones still or not, but if they do, well worth considering.

Lenovo V110-15ISK 80TL is what I went for although not the lightest it seemed to give a decent spec for the money.

 

As for refurbished I don't think rocking up with a used laptop would have made the principal happy, if it was for teachers or students then refurb all the way

There is a somewhat wicked side of me that makes me want to suggest that you find them one of the slowest laptops in use around the school. The when they complain its too slow - point out its what others are using...and perhaps management should consider an appropriate investment in ICT that would benefit everyone.

Shawly the principle should get the standard staff laptop also if it is a refurbishment what wrong with that. I would be embarrassed if I was a principal and had superdup kit and the other staff had rubbish. You not giving him a laptop with missing keys are you? Same as I would get rid of a printer out of my office if I was enforcing managed printing in staff.

NS Optimum have the following for £364

 

• Intel Core i5-6200U Processor

• 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD

• 15.6” HD 1366 x 768 Screen

• 802.11 ac Wireless

• DVDRW Optical Drive

• Windows 10 Home

 

But I've not looked carefully at the offer - or exactly what the specs mean.

 

I've always taken fright whenever suppliers promote a "school laptop" - because often in their mind the only qualifying feature is the price. And while that is important, really important - I think there must be a tendancy to succumb to such offers on that basis.

 

Then later to discover that it was a 5400 rpm slow hard drive...and indeed one which typically fails ofter 18 months of being thrown around the classroom (I always tell colleagues that the word "laptop" is a misnomer ...the gyroscopic forces on a spinning disk are enormous and laptops should not be moved when in use)

 

...then they often have enough RAM 9just) for 2 years after which new versions of office or windows means that its just not enough....

 

...and that wireless capability turns out to be a single stream "n" card so all that money you invested in "ac" access points has no benefit...

 

And to top it all the screen isn't even full HD.

 

In this case - I can see its got an SSD ...although not a generous size it might do. I think I'd prefer 6GB for longevity (our laptops seem to be around for 8 years or more)...but 4GB is not top bad.

 

And while it has an "ac" wireless card - I bet (obviously not with real money) its only a single stream and non MU-MIMO - which is fine for home use - but rubbish when it comes to makes the best of those new access points you have installed (or intend to) because you won't be able to use wide channels effectively in your classroom blocks.

 

And the processor is...well again its OK - as is the screen.

 

So I suppose for its price its not too bad - which is why I posted the details.

Draw up a shortlist then give them the final choice. At that price something will be deemed to be "wrong". Internet user is right, they will be wanting a MacBook but think that you have superpowers and that because they are a HT they can make it so.

@AlanD it is also Windows 10 Home, which is not domain joinable if I remember rightly, so that might be a killer straight off the bat :)

 

...well I assumed you had some kind of Microsoft School's agreement which would allow you to upgrade versions of Windows....

 

And if not maybe the upgrade price is not that bad - again for a school..

 

Just trying to get my head around what you are wanting to do with this laptop. Sort of assumed it would be rebuilt as part of your domain network with ...and that you have some automated way to do this - and hence it would get the appropriate version of windows.

 

Are you saying....that you are giving it to him as a stand alone machine? Possibly with admin right so he can install his own stuff....and you are going to let this computer connect/join your domain network? I wouldn't recommend that....there is no way to know what he might have on the computer. If its stand alone - then its stand alone...and I would look at some other remote means of gaining access to school files....

We have ees so i just buy with the cheapest flavour of windows then upgrade.

 

They just wanted a pc for home so it will be standalone with office av and some hany links.

 

Going to bit locker the drive due to content.

 

If they are not happy then its tough as i sent a picture of the unit with spec. All i got back was whatever you think best.
