They should of lol. I'm a bit disappointed that it doesn't support on-site active directory. Otherwise, it would have been perfect for laptops.

 

Yeah, that's going to be a show stopper for us and probably a lot of other schools :(

 

I'm sure MS knows their market better than me but IMO the thing causing MS to bleed market share in schools at the moment is simply the lack of affordable half decent Windows laptops and tablets. Right now everyone seems to be buying either ~£200 Chromebooks or ~£340 iPads. It feels like a mistake on Microsoft's part focusing on selling £1000+ laptops when what educational establishments clearly want are budget devices that either pupils can buy or the school can roll out cabinets of for a class to use.

 

Microsoft, or their partners, need to somehow bring out a reliable half decent laptop/tablet in the ~£300 range to compete with Apple and Google. Everyone knows if you buy a laptop for that kind of money it'll basically be junk (720p screen, slow hard drive, rubbish battery life, slow CPU, horrible trackpad, etc) which is what's driving schools to look at alternative hardware like iPads and Chromebooks. It's good to have more management options available to control Windows devices but unless the hardware itself, and the experience provided by budget Windows devices, improves dramatically it doesn't have a future in education or anywhere else in the mainstream generally as far as I can see.

I guess we'll see how some of the budget devices pan out.

 

So basically to get a mid-range Surface laptop (i5 / 8Gb RAM / 256GB SSD) you're looking at £1300 :eek: Also, I'm not really getting why on earth you'd want any kind of fabric material on a laptop keyboard surface? Surely it's going to get badly marked up, discoloured and will start to fray at the edges after a few months of use?

I think it's a separate cost, or that's how I interpreted it. Found this on their blog post "Free trial of Microsoft Intune for Education"

 

 

Ahh yes, must have missed the Intune for Education stuff.

 

Intune for Education will be available in preview in the coming weeks and broadly available this spring for $30 per device, and via volume licensing.

Hi

 

Interested to get people's take on the part of the announcement regarding teams and classroom (sorry to steer the thread away from hardware/OS!).

I'm reading this as 'we're merging classroom into Teams and sacking it off'. Which is slightly annoying personally as I've been trying to get people using Classroom since it was launched in january, but long term I can see teams being a more flexible and 'all in one box' solution.

Good luck with that. I'm pretty sure they'll make sure it either isn't on the education upgrade path or restrict the UEFI

I don't think i need much luck, as they announced you can upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro for $49.

The one we have just reviewed came with Win 10 Pro and ran that fine. I wouldn't assume they would restrict them and on the conf yesterday they did say repeatedly that you can upgrade from S to Pro easily so I wouldn't assume that they would be locking down devices.

I was expecting these to be RT v2 and that was the basis of the scepticism

They announced that the Surface could be upgraded to W10 Pro for $49. A $189 device might be a different story.

Do you have to pay $49 for each device to go to pro and then upgrade to enterprise?

The upgrade from S to Pro is free for education and if you already have a suitable volume licensing agreement then you can upgrade to Education or Enterprise for 'free' too.

Ok I'm lost as to what the point of the 'S' (sh*t ??) edition is now if you can just upgrade it, for free.

its a quick booting os just for surfing the net like a chromebook
