As all the devices are Win10 Edu now we don't have Movie Maker installed and I'm keen to see if there are any other free alternatives that people are using. What are other people using for their movie making lessons at the mo? Olly

Personally, I'm holding out for the VLC Movie Creator (VLMC, open source video editor - VideoLAN). 1

OpenShot looks good but it's 150Mb+ which seems fairly big and I'm loathed to push that out to suites of laptops via GPO over wifi. I'll see what happens though with a few at a time. Olly

Hitfilm 4 Express has an msi, is about 400MBs, and they have a suggestion on their website to email them to get it for free for a whole school, seems a bit slow on my core i5 8GB ssd laptop though Shotcut has a zip so doesn't need installing, might run from network. The UI is a bit different to most. 183MBs Lightworks has a complex installer, multiple VCC installs, pretty normal to use, but requires a unique ID and to sign in to a free registration. 87MBs, hung when I tried to close it Blender has a video editor built in, and an msi installer. Pinnacle VideoSpin doesn't seem to be available any more, can get it from 3rd party sites. Download Free Video Editor: best software for video editing. looks decent, 37MBs, annoying installer though

Online, so no installation and therefore also accessible from home and mobile devices (perhaps not so important for your Year 6s, but it makes a good addition to a BYOD school like ours). I think the basic one is free or you can get an educational one where teachers can see the projects as they're being created and such like.

Our Drama teacher loves it, considering buying a school licence for it, so we can create accounts for students and give teachers easier access to the students' work.

I tried again with a 4 minute video of footabe from my xbox (even though it was mp4 outputted by microsoft software photos wouldnt see it till id converted it to an mp4 (no idea why but bar the watermark which for testing i can live with its fine) it seemed ok i could add titles even got the 3d working so i affixed a comet to the wing mirror of the car in the video and it followed it fairly well. its not great and does seem to have quirks (like file format issues and you need more than 1 item in a collection to do anything like effects (but you dont need to use all items) but for free its not bad https://1drv.ms/v/s!AroWkVJIqeywhNle1bK-m9iT1_4PKg
ADMaster Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 What do folks think of this Windows Movie Maker Free Download - For Windows 7/8/10/Xp/Vista It was just sent to me by a teacher asking for it to be installed. It looks like a repackaged Movie maker 2012. My first test run seamed to work, I used the verysilent switch, but need to try the reg keys listed in the other thread. It also looks to need .net 3.5 which I do not deploy by default anymore.
sted Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 in win 10 1709 the photos app does some movie maker style stuff (ive not spent long with it tbh but i did manage to add a comet tail to a cars wing mirror that followed it as the car moved) you can even add 3d effects to moving objects

enjay Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Blocked as malware here too. Even if it is a clean repackaged version of MM2012, I'd be a bit concerned about the licensing implications - does whoever created it have permission from MS to extract and repackage the software?

mavhc Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I've been using Blender as a video editor, decent enough, plus msi installer, and you get the rest of the 3d modelling for free. Takes a while to learn it though. That plus the 1709 Photos video editor is probably enough for us.
