Ah I had blue and yellow beauties like that too. Only recently threw out my scsi 50 pin cables (and 4x external cd writer)

Not used one of them for years. I've still got an IDE caddy for hard drives for when the odd job comes in but used it once in the last 10 years I think.

The youth of today will never know of the joys of working out the jumper positions on a drive, plugging it in, swearing a lot, then re-trying a different jumper jumble.

Couldn't you have left the jumper on Cable Select? ;)

Many drives also offer a "cable select" (CS) option. When using cable select, each drive is jumpered (more about this on the next page) to the "CS" setting. A special signal is sent to pin 28 of the drive attached to the master drive connector, which instructs that drive to become the master drive and to assume the duties of controlling data transfer on that EIDE channel. Conversely, because this signal is absent on the drive connected to the slave connector, that drive assumes the slave mode. Pretty smart, huh?

 

We suggest you use the CS setting on all PATA drives. Why? Because it saves you the aggravation of having to remove existing drives to look at the little label and see how to reset the jumpers if you change the drive assignment or add a drive later on.

A drive mode called cable select was described as optional in ATA-1 and has come into fairly widespread use with ATA-5 and later. A drive set to "cable select" automatically configures itself as master or slave, according to its position on the cable. Cable select is controlled by pin 28. The host adapter grounds this pin; if a device sees that the pin is grounded, it becomes the master device; if it sees that pin 28 is open, the device becomes the slave device.

 

This setting is usually chosen by a jumper setting on the drive called "cable select", usually marked CS, which is separate from the "master" or "slave" setting.

I vaguely remember swapping 40-wire/40-pin cables to 80-wire/40-pin cables just to take advantage of this feature. :)

I found Cable Select to consistently be the work of tiny computer Satan, and on some drives required a jumper selection that looked like a bad game of a Tetris!

We thought we had seen the last of those! Until we cracked open a DT machine and there it was, plugged into a 60GB drive! No wonder it was running a bit slow.

Those were the days when 'Master' and 'Slave' were acceptable, then political correctness got in the way :D

 

I've had the pleasure of using original ribbon IDE and Floppy drive cables, then later on rounded versions - ingenious!

or just dropping the jumper and spending the next 10 mins trying to find where it went

I hated SCSI cables. You had to get everything 'exactly' right for them to work.

Well, we've been in each others lives for 14 years, but it's just working out anymore.

At one time I'd see you almost daily and we'd mess around, hell, you wern't even expensive, but recently, well, more than recently things just haven't been right.

You've just been hanging around, adding nothing to my life, taking up space. I'd hoped, oh I'd hoped, that you would once more become useful in some way, but time has proven otherwise.

So, it's the bin for you.

We've got rid of all ours including all the machines that use it. You know what this is one little friend I do not miss.

Indeed. I never found cable select to be reliable at all.

Did gig always have your optical drive on the second channel or as a slave ?

Ditto, never seemed to work properly for me, so always reverted to master and slave.

 

Haven't worked on a PC with IDE for probably going on 10 years now!

I still use IDE cables to connect stuff to the header connection on my R-Pi !! There's still a use for it yet, you just haven't thought of it!!

On my work experience I was building a load of brand new PCs back in the day where drives weren't that cheap I managed to bend a load of pins on a hard drive and was bricking myself about telling the boss, luckily I managed to bend them all back in place somehow using the cable and it worked fine! Probably one of the first to fail but by then I would have long completed my work experience anyway ;)
