I'm off (for a bit at least)

This is my last day working in my school. I've got an official farewell from the Head later this morning (my manager is suggesting they might give me a framed pic of the school) and last week I was given an unexpected round of applause from my fellow support staff (prompted - not spontaneous but I take what I can get).

I imagine I'll be gone by lunch - unless some IT disaster befalls the school in the next 4 hours.

 

So far I've got four cards, two large boxes of chocolates and biscuits and some John Lewis vouchers. I'm wondering if I should change jobs on a more regular basis

 

Leaving gifts from my last post were a satchel and three books on it stuff (sql 2005, exchange 2003 and active directory) - none of which I read. I got autobot cufflinks and a bottle of champagne from my first departure.

 

My new role is still in education (university) but I'm not sure if I'll be back here for a while so I thought I'd bid you adieu.

More responsibility, more money, less time for myself and (for some reason) a not-quite-as-important-sounding job title.

I thought it worth giving up some time now (losing about 12 hours/week at home to my new job) for money, pension and proper management experience - give me 15 years and I'll no doubt be desperate to get back to a nice technical Network Manager position.

 

My fellow ict workers have already divvied up my stuff and are in discussions over who gets my desk (I had the best desk, naturally).

 

Hopefully I've been of as much help to some of you as you lot have been to me over the years.

Hello to: Managing people rather than just organising them, designing enormous networks (hundreds of switches, thousands of APs and dozens of routers), helping to budget 7 figures, writing 5 year plans, making wifi work well in a collection of randomly spaced giant buildings seemingly composed solely of reinforced concrete, IPv6 based networking, linux servers, legal compliance and organising 24/7/365 support

(dns, dhcp, phones, switches, cabling, radius, routers and firewalls - you're coming with me!)

Good luck in the Uni, if you are still working in IT worth while to keep visiting. There are a few of us in Uni's still on here and coming from a school environment I naturally still visit and hopefully my advice is still usefull.

 

I have no interaction with 85% of the stuff I used to do i.e. AD, Office365, Exchange, SAN, Veeam, VMWare etc. etc. but still try and keep up to date with tech and knowledge mostly through home labs.

The picture of the school isn't as tacky as I thought it might have been. It's a framed print of a mid-19th century watercolour depiction of the school from the front. 2 more boxes of choc have arrived as well as a trio of red wines.
