I'm just moving some photos around between two servers to sort out disk space.

 

I'm getting about 8mb/s transfer speeds which seems slow but is about normal for data moving processes here - reading a couple of random articles on the web folk are getting say 80mb/s when tweaking various settings.

 

What sort of speeds do you get between two servers with Gig ports on them?

probably depends hoow much the servers nics are loaded. Just a thought are they broadcom nics if so disable virtual command queues that can make them much faster

in device manager find you nic(s) and it on the advanced page (its not always an issue the one im on now seems fine with enabled but in the past ive had it be so slow its unusable)

Unfortunately these don't have that option.

 

They have IPv4 Large Send Offload which reportedly speeds things up when you disable it, but often needs a reboot before it kicks in which I can't do yet.

I think to myself, no it's not its the crappy website your using that looks like it was made buy a guy in his shed! ;)

This is between a backup server the the other side of the site and one of our cluster hosts.

 

(the 1.4gbps is the 10GbSAN connection)

Task Manager shots look more impressive :)

 

for mere mortals on mostly 1GB/100mb to the desktop and 1GB back to core switch we can but dream of such figures :)

Please specify mega BITS or mega BYTES!!

 

My 1Gig connection is measuring 936Mb/s which is 117MB/s

Don't understand the poll, as all of them indicate less than 100mbps.

The limiting factor on our servers right now is the network switch (old, barely supports 10Gbit). New switch going to be ordered soon so should improve that significantly, plus our new servers are all SSD in RAID 6.

I never remember whether Server 2008 is in MB/s or Mb/s but whichever it is is what the poll is in.

 

We're getting 8 of them per second whichever it's written in!

Something is broken if you only get 8 thingmes per second.

My advice is to do what I did and use a network diagnostic tool to get the number. The reason I say this is because you shouldn't rely on file copying. File copying has the overhead of the file copy protocols, the disk speed, the file system and other things that you don't want to get in the way. First measure the network speed and then determine whether you have a network problem. If the network looks ok, then start looking at the protocols, disks etc. At the moment you are measuring everything and you need to pin it down a bit better.

I remember many years ago doing a massive robocopy (from my PC) between 2 servers. It was taking aaaaaaages. So I stopped it and ran it again from one of the servers. It went like lightening. The first job was sending all the copying *via* my PC.

I've accidentally done that in that past as well.

 

Most of our network is 1gig - so roughly 112-15meg/sec copying speed. That which isn't is 10gig but all of the 10gig machines are on the part that is still 1 gig and all of the 10gig network only serves 1gig machines.

Nah, 8MBps would be 64Mbps, which if the transfer is to a 100Mbit connected device, would be a reasonable speed.

Yeh task manager measures in Megabits so for MegaBytes divide by 8.

 

PS: OP is getting sub 100Mb/s figures there, surely his servers cant be 100meg? If they're 1Gbit then I suggest there is a problem somewhere that we can work through.
