Just wondering what the best setup is to create a facebook page/business. Looking at it do we need to create a facebook profile and then create the page from there? If so what should i call the facebook profile as i would not want it as our school name so it could be searched.

Anyone got any best practices to setting this up as facebook have not made this easy.

Answered your own question there. You need to create a 'person' who can then create and manage the page. I have setup the 3 pages at school this way. You can manage the page via your own personal account without anyone public knowing, but, lets be honest this is not best practice!

We just created a ' IT Support' account that manages the page and groups that we have.

You can then create accounts for other staff (who may need to have access) and promote them to Mod or Admin.

Yes that what we are trying not to do. I am half tempted to create a fake user and then create the page from there. Then we have got the joy of trying to merge that with the auto generated page.

I followed this https://m.facebook.com/help/168172433243582

Then https://m.facebook.com/help/249601088403018?helpref=faq_content

They wanted proof of ownership of the auto page, sent them a bill with the schools address on and it was all sorted in about 2 days.

At the same time they verified our page and put a blue tick on it! Happy days.

We don't get the option to claim business. I think this page is generated from wikipedia so we don't actually get that option.

Ahh yes. I have heard that the Wiki generated pages are prooving quite difficult to take ownership of.

Luckily for us the page that we claimed was a check-in page.

Sorry I couldn't help with that one.

If I find anything useful, I'll post back here.

We have this problem also. See my thread here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/cloud-services/178388-claim-facebook-autogenerated-page.html

The Duplicate URL trick does work as now when people go to the auto generated page they get redirected to our official page. Doesn't seem to do this on mobiles though so is still an issue. Doesn't seem to be any way to remove the auto generated page.

We have had a nightmare at our school with this with no end is sight to sort it.

Have you managed to get a redirect from the auto generated page to yours? At least that is something for us.

We created a fake user account to start with and it worked fine for a year or two until Facebook suspended the account the not being recognised as a real person, and because we couldn't upload proof of ID for the fake user, we had to give up on that idea.

I then created an account in my own name and made a private group for our school. We add parents to that group so they can see the latest news but nobody else can. But it depends what you want to use your page/group for.

I created our facebook page using my own name and a work email, one especially created to use with facebook. Its not my personal facebook account so I don't see the issue or am I missing something? Why do you need a fake account?

We've had a Facebook page for quite a while now, I created it with my personal account, and have given several other members of staff access to use it with their own personal accounts. There have never been any issues with this, no one has ever found personal accounts or known who's posting...

There's no point creating a dummy Facebook profile for it, unless you don't have an account already and need to manage it... Works really well... which makes a change these days!

Well for us, our Headteacher wanted it as locked down as possible and wanted our account name to be SIJS Learning. So I made an account with first name 'SIJS' and surname 'Learning', which worked for a couple of years. We then added parents as 'friends' so they could see our timeline.

We have a private group now which all of the teachers use but when we post something it says my name instead of the name we'd prefer- SIJS Learning. Apart from that, it works well as a news feed.

I have an account with the school name, which you don't add any friends to. Then I created a page with that account. People like the page and see posts that way. The page is set as a community page (this disables reviews tab). I then have a word filter/page moderation for when people comment on pictures, so it gets auto hidden so that only them and their friends can see the comments. This protects the identity of any parents, as we have issues like that here. People cannot post to the page.

Some of my settings:

If you want to go through it in more detail, feel free to PM me.

@Joanne - What are the words in the page moderation section? Posts containing these words are blocked.

I don't think there are any swears in here. Sorry if there are:

Looks like really helpful advice for what I'm trying to do.

I've been asked to ensure that the parents' association page is being run properly. Apart from checking similar settings, does anyone have any extra guidance when you're trying to control a page that's not directly owned by the school. One thing that strikes me is that they have a much higher turnover of personnel, so we need to have a procedure for when the real person who has set up the account moves on.

Unfortunately the parents' association went ahead and set up their page without mentioning it to anyone in school, so I'm playing catch-up...

Ask them to add you in as an Admin of the page. Then if the original owner leaves it shouldn't matter.

There's nothing you can do. Just have to hope that people like it and then the reach will get further. Because I didn't post last week, my link to the website I put on today has only had 60 views.... normally it's hundreds.

I am attempting to do this today, I started by creating an account using the email facebook@schoolemailaddress. This appeared to work, I've created the school page, and then suddenly I was asked to upload a photograph and I'm locked out of the account

I assume I should have used my real work email address but was trying to avoid linking it back to a specific person, in case I leave. Now, I guess even if I start again, I can't get my page back and I was quite happy with the name I'd used.

Has anyone managed to retrieve a page after this?

I think they'd prefer you added multiple admins to a page. When someone leaves don't you forward their emails to the replacement person?

But you can probably just upload a photo to fix it
