fiza Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 We haven't really looked at Facebook as an information portal for our school before, we tend to use Twitter. I am now looking at Facebook but have found that there is an auto-generated page for our school and I can't create one with the same name or seem to be able claim the existing one. Does anyone know how we can go about claiming our school as a business page on Facebook?

IIRC for us there was a button to click to claim it ( then there a verification process) 1

elsiegee40 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 (edited) There should be an "Is this your business?" in the dropdown for the page. If this doesn't appear, the other way is to "edit" the page and merge it with your official Facebook page by linking the two http://wiki.ptly.com/plugins/servlet/mobile#content/view/30113794 Edited December 26, 2016 by elsiegee40 1

We don't have an official Facebook site/page. When I try to create one with our name it says the page already exists so use a different name. The auto generated page doesn't have an edit button that I can see.
elsiegee40 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 There should be a dropdown menu on the page (next to the title? I am on my phone and can't check just now) The Edit option is there
elsiegee40 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 (edited) (Note for others - @fiza sent me a link) Unfortunately this doesn't look like good news. The page that's been generated is a "Wiki Page", i.e. it got its data from Wikipedia rather than from someone checking in to a location when the page didn't exist and thus creating a page. These Wiki pages seem to be causing trouble for lots of people e.g. https://www.facebook.com/business/help/community/question/?id=10153781140612572 also this People reported successfully claiming their page with the "claim this page" button in the settings drop down. But ... this feature no longer exists. It's safe to say that there are A LOT of angry business owners who are publicly showcasing their rage in Facebook's help forums. And all for good reason! We hope that Facebook decides to provide a solution for these annoying auto generated business pages. It's unknown whether the claim feature will return. Until then, we just have to make the best of a bad situation! http://inbound.lollipoplocal.co.uk/inbound-blog/facebook-auto-generated-business-page Edited December 26, 2016 by elsiegee40
fiza Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 @elsiegee40 thanks for looking. That's not good if we can't take ownership of the page. It's using our school name so I can't even create another page with the same name.

"Wibblers School Anytown" rather than just "Wibblers School" 1
fiza Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 I have already done that but the auto generated page is the one that appears at the top of the list when you Google. Unless I can link both pages I don't think my new one will ever get any traffic. I have sent a message to Facebook via their 'report a violation of intellectual property' as it seemed the only way of getting my point across. 1
elsiegee40 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I have a cunning plan @fiza... Start with your official page Go to Suggest Edits Scroll right to the bottom to Report Duplicate URL and paste in the link to the Auto Generated Page where it says "Add duplicate URL" and Save. Get as many people as possible to do this. (Send me the link to the official URL and I'll do it from my ID and my facebook testing ones too )
forkies Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 When I took over our page, I filled in all the info so it matched our school info and then got the page verified which merged the auto generated page and our page together and made mine appear top of the list as it was verified. 1

Get it set up and running asap. Before you ask lots of people to do this. Otherwise you run the risk of your new page disappearing!
DrCheese Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 We had an auto generated page in addition to our main page for years (Our main page had 1,500 likes!) - Only way we was able to take it over was eventually getting the main page verified, which took a number of years as Facebook have only recently started verfiying school pages (We were told we weren't an organisation before :|) Facebook is definately the main driver for our marketing now, the amount of people you can hit is unreal compared to any other method. 2

Thanks in advance.

fiza Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 Just bumping this thread so that a few more Edugeeks can help me out. Thanks
fiza Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 Another bump for this thread now that most people are back in work. If anyone else can please help it would be most appreciated. If you can just go through the steps in post #11. Thanks
Devontechie Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Just had a notification that my edit has been accepted for the duplicate page. 2
