Gonna start looking at Windows 10 Soon..... Education,Enterprise or LTSB?

My instinct says Education..... but something else is saying i should be looking at another version.

What version do you use and why?

just to note, Education customers are not eligible for Enterprise without LTSB.

Where are you getting this information from? Microsoft says otherwise...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-my/licensing/product-licensing/products.aspx

4.9 Academic Programs

The following applies to customers in all Academic Volume Licensing Programs:

4.9.1 Rights to Windows Enterprise LTSB

Academic Institutions with Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5 or Windows 10 Education E3/E5 may install Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB in place of any permitted perpetual instance.

4.9.2 Rights to Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education Edition, or Windows 10 Pro Education

Academic Institutions with Software Assurance for Windows Enterprise or Windows Education have rights to install and use Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, or Windows 10 Pro Education.

4.1.1 Windows 10 Enterprise Current Branch Rights

Windows 10 Enterprise Current Branch may only be used by Customers that have SA, Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5, or VDA licenses. Customers who allow SA to lapse must uninstall Windows 10 Enterprise Current Branch. Customers that have perpetual rights to Windows Enterprise may install the version of Windows Enterprise LTSB that is current at the time of lapse.

^ EES includes SA.

I have an email from my licensing provider and MS volume licensing services to say otherwise. Typical MS!!

How recent are the e-mails? If they are from last year that's probably why. MS didn't used to allow academic institutions to use Enterprise, but they do now. :)

It was Feb, so might have lagging behind a little :)

I've just signed up for a new Microsoft OVS - EES agreement - I asked the supplier if we could use Windows 10 Enterprise and was told yes - everything looks to have been activated today and when I sign into the VLSC it doesn't give me the option to download Win10 Enterprise - only Win10 Ent LTSB - based on all the mixed messages SHOULD I be able to get the normal version of Enterprise to use in school? If not, can I cancel my subscription based on false information?

Contact MS licensing and get them to add it to your agreement. Youll have to contact them to get the KMS keys added for office and windows.

Thanks! Is this fairly easy to sort out with them or am I going to be tearing my hair out trying to get them to add it and go on for months?!?

How do I know if I'm getting exactly what we've paid for?

Adding the keys was fairly painless for me....one phone call.

As mentioned, a quick phone call or an email stating your agreement number and what you're after and they will add it for you. Its as simple as that.

Spoke to Microsoft - Very Helpful... got the KMS keys sorted, eventually they gave me access to Enterprise, and also added a general KMS key to use on the server which would then work for all versions of Windows 10 instead of having to load keys for each version of Windows 10.

Happy Days.

Cheers Guys

Out of interest why are you using Enterprise over Education or LTSB?

isnt education/enterprise identical bar the branding

I'm still failing to see the advantages of going Education over LTSB given all the recent issues with 1607 and WSUS updates and trying to remove all the unnecessary apps.

Yet it's winning the poll.

So come on, those using Education...convince this LTSB user why I might want to switch?

I think it is personal preference. We use Education but kept on 1511 with the apps removed from the install.wim but we use edge and cortana. We did not install the 1607 update as it re-installed all the apps. I think any new

updates now, like the creators update will not re-install the apps so will wait for that. But really if all you are going to use Windows 10 for is a basic Windows hosting OS for software then I think LTSB is fine. Only issue is only

getting an update annually.

I'm only in testing, but I'm probably going for full Enterprise. We have EES Software Assurance, so we might as well.

I did play with Education, but the difference is so minimal, it's just missing Cortana and Windows Store, which I can turn off on Enterprise with policies. You never know, I might want them back one day (unlikely, but why knobble the option permanently).

I did have to have the discussion with my licensing provider and Microsoft to confirm eligibility and get the keys added to VLSC though, they're often not there by default.

I have still to see anything that would say we are Windows 10 Enterprise licensed. My EES license summary says windows 10 2016 LTSB (with our FTE) and underneath it "Windows E3 Per Device" listed as Windows 10 Education with our FTE. I do have the option to download Windows 10 Enterprise but there are no MAK keys available for it (only a KMS). Windows 10 Education has both MAK and KMS key available. Looking at the relationship summary and our current programme gives "OVS Desktop Platform" as being SA eligible so that adds yet more confusion to the pot.

Can you actually get EES without SA? Does that mean EES without SA gives you W10 education but not enterprise? Does the SA eligible part mean you can now use the SA part to "upgrade" to W10 enterprise?

Personally I wouldn't be keen arguing with the BSA so we went W10 education.
