Trapper Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 If not then just don't read.... Anyway it's been, what, six years since Universe premiered and five years since it was cancelled. I never gave it a shot. I was far too p!ssed at the creative team for choosing to cancel Atlantis' sixth season to do this - I mean who cancels a TV show willingly! SciFi were happy to keep paying for it! Because of this I never gave Universe a chance, at all. I mean I admit after re-watching they really should have stopped using the soft rock music at the end of each episode far sooner, and we could have done with far less of the teenage angst thing. But it got better, and Robert Carlyle was magnificent. From mid-season 1 to the end it was fantastic, and the ending they chose was inspired. So I am sorry. I should have given it a chance, and should not have hooted in celebration when it was cancelled. Given that now I really wanted to see the third season. I know this is not uncommon amongst fans these days, so anyone else who skipped this - watch it. It really is good, and then beat yourself soundly about the head for allowing it to be cancelled.
DJ-1701 Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 Stargate fan here too. To be fair, I found Universe was hard to stick with, and I ended up missing episodes. With regard to viewing figures, I believe they mostly monitor the US market, so I wouldn't kick yourself too hard. Shame there isn't any more Stargate related shows, some good series there.

Don't suppose either of you read up the plot for that film? Looked like it would have been quite good

CAM Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Sadly I missed Season 2 of SGU but I loved the first season. I'm a massive Stargate fan and picked up all the SG1 and SGA boxed sets when I was younger. This was before streaming slashed the prices of DVDs to current levels so it was about £40-50 per SG1 boxed set! I was hooked and still have them.

Found it too dour and didn't like the "they've got no support... except they can communicate with Earth" idea. You're making me want to give it another chance. Still haven't had my much-needed Plex Purge, so still got the eps.

It felt like they'd watched the Battlestar Galactica remake and had decided that what their happy yet dramatic tv universe needed was a big dose of misery to make it more watchable. SG-1 was a magnificent show, although I feel it got eclipsed by Atlantis towards the end. I did love that it became a place for the Farscape cast to find work again! As for the new films. I'm slightly worried about them. SG-1 and the spinoffs did a really good job of fleshing out the original film and making a rich universe for the writers to make stories out of. I'd be upset if they did a reboot and ignored that completely... 1

The film could well be a completely different story... we didn't get much information at all from the film, so much of the content and understanding of Ra and his people came from SG1. Lonix Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Big SG fan, also in the middle of a sort - re-watch of SG1. SGU, I'm not going to feel sorry for it's failure. Personally I believe the producers were too arrogant thinking the show would work no matter what, I remember reading something along the lines "this can be bigger than star trek in the amount of shows etc it made". I watched them, I hoped and I prayed it would improve but it felt too much like BSG reboot. Although the quality of each episode was high (they had bigger budget) but the overall story and pace of each series was very slow. Where it felt like each season of SG1/SGA had a lot happen and they gained a lot of knowledge, I felt SGU just .... didn't really do much.. felt like each episode were more like season fillers and nothing developed. I also felt like I couldn't stand half the characters. Bit like Enterprise where it walked away on what made the show famous/popular. It came to the point that I had to force my self to watch every episode just in the hope we got something really good and every time it came close... it would just end there. SGA/SG1 also had great lead characters, SGU just didn't in my view. I feel the list of failings were far beyond the list of positives. Just like Enterprise I only ever watched them on catch-up although unlike Enterprise where I actually enjoyed season 3 - SGU didn't get that far. A show shouldn't take that long to become really good. As for the new movies, these have been talked about for a while and I'm glad they are coming back.

Shame the box sets are so bloody expensive, though Wasn't a fan of Atlantis though, but I'll fully admit that may just be because I was younger and it wasn't SG-1 From what I have seen of Universe (which is admittedly very, very little. At extremely sporadic intervals), I quite enjoyed it. I just don't watch much telly anymore. Are any of them on Netflix/Prime Video, does anybody know? Suddenly I want to binge watch some Stargate

TwistedHelixis Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Just so you know I think SGU is only watchable if you can watch it back to back, with it being a bit slow it was very hard to pick up a week later so I only watched 3 or 4 the first time round. Last year I decided to give it another go and really liked it as I could choose to watch them one after another and it was very enjoyable.

I'm just hoping the tap into a little bit of the history It was so in-depth that an entire field of fictional science was created from the storyline. Wormhole Physics 101 and it was reasonably consistent for a sci-fi concept. Plus the SGC never did fully explore the gate's API as one episode described how they'd only figured out half the signals that the gate sent to their dialling computer so plenty of room to do stuff. And we know solar flares can cause time travel and the gate can shunt people to other dimensions although that's where gate science starts getting a bit silly and I hope they don't go down that route. The best part of the series was watching humanity grow into becoming the Tau'ri race. They go from being stuck on a planet wondering how the Point of Origin works to being able to jump-start a gate with a portable generator and becoming the centre of galactic diplomacy. And the more destructive sides of Tau'ri capabilities.... Edited October 17, 2016 by CAM 1
JoeBloggs Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 I enjoyed SGU towards the end, but I had to stick to it at the start! Thoroughly enjoyed SG-1 & Atlantis. Binged them both when they came on Netflix, not sure if they're still on!

Unlike how Joe Strazynski could make a five year long story not feel slow (well ignore season five and Crusade) the Stargate creative team didn't hit it right in year one. It got better in the second season, but by then they'd lost the audience. Watching it now it works, at the time it didn't. Far too much crap floating around from them cancelling Atlantis (who cancel's their own show when the network want to keep it running?!) and too close to BSG both in narrative and production year. SG-1 should have ended at the end of season six as they thought it would with Full Circle (Abydos gets blown up) as it got worse with Richard Dean Anderson only in a handful of shows and Shanks getting some bad stories as punishment for sodding off for a year. The Ori arc was a good idea and it was interested to watch Claudia Black and Ben Browder act in a different dynamic, but it should have been spun off.
