Andi Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 What firewalls are people running at home these days, preferably freeware. I was using zonalarm until recently, but due to its seeming inability to be able to open specific ports with the free version I have ditched it. I currently have no firewall running as I'm behind a netgear router anyway, but just wondered what the techy community are up to?

I hated it and it kept randomly crashing so I've installed Kaspersky Internet Security - under special offer at the moment - I got it for just over a tenner and I'm very pleased with it. Best deal I can find at the moment though is this one with Eclipse: http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=SWK-INTSEC73 It's for a three user licence OEM. 2
plock Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I'm running a FireBrick back at home. (http://www.firebrick.co.uk/) I managed to get it free when they first came out, forget how now. I've kept the firmware up-to-date and it has never let me down!
Ryan Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Tried many firewalls over the years, from the bloated Norton IS, to the easy-to-hack older versions of ZoneAlarm. Kaspersky seems to be the best though. I recommended it to my dad and he loves it, and i know a dude who works for them and they seem to be really on the ball. Kaspersky gets my thumbs up.

Geoff Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 My router works as a firewall to the network (A WRT54GL with custom firmware). I have no AV/Firewall on my desktop PCs. My Linux PC doesn't need it and my Wintendo PC doesn't have anything important on it (I just reimage it when it breaks).

Guest Guest Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Just sat behind a Smoothwall Community box with ClamAV here. No software firewall or AV atm as my PC is too slow as it is, never mind with an AV on it!

On a Tosh Laptop - [ which Dual boots with XP - that has the DVD burner ], also have 2 other XP boxes - one acting as a gateway, the other a PC which holds stuff like my sons schools website stuff. That has a another XP VMware PC which I use for my scripts and programs etc. All are linked to my IBM 2003 server, - [ which has 2008 on another partition ], everything can then talk to my two Freenas boxes which Rsync to each other. There is a PC in each of the kids bedrooms [ wireless ] and one downstairs which the missus uses [ wireless ], then an old IPAQ which I use. One thing I am lacking is a gigabit switch and a UPS. I need a UPS as its a nightware when the power goes off like last week when I was having a new alarm fitted.....
Joedetic Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I've got an APC rackmount jobby that's powering my servers and my core switch (cisco 2924-EN-XL ). The only thing is that if the power goes out it gracefully shuts down the windows server (because it has a serial lead connected to it) but the FreeBSD server has a nasty powercut-shutdown. I've not got round to getting the windows box to remotely shutdown the freebsd box using the apc software. It's on my list of things to do, as is gigabit tbh.

Over the years I've used F-Secure, Zone Alarm, and currently Eset. All of them have caused problems. I used to have a USB broadband 'modem', but now I've got a NAT router, I'm not sure I need a software firewall.
