High winds meant that Sunday's Olympic rowing events were postponed at the Lagoa Stadium in Rio.

 

Team GB's Heather Stanning and Helen Glover were due to compete in one of 10 events beginning at 12:30 BST.

 

However, bad weather delayed the start by two hours before the rowing was called off at 14:22 BST.

 

The weather caused problems on Saturday for Serbs Milos Vasic and Nenad Bedik, who capsized during their men's semi-final qualification at Lagoa.

Yesterday, a gymnast’s sickening leg break on the first day of Rio 2016 drew sharp intakes of breath across the globe.

 

But the agony didn’t end there for Samir Ait Said, as footage from later in the evening shows him being dropped as he was loaded into an ambulance.

 

Medics treating the injured Frenchman dropped his stretcher – making the 26-year-old’s day to forget even more painful.

 

It happened shortly after he landed at an awkward angle while landing a vault, causing his left leg to bend at a hideously unnatural angle...

Watching the news this evening I am reminded of Adam Peaty's achievement in winning Great Britain's first gold medal of the 2016 games in a world record time:

Congrats to the GB team, it is rather close to China, the golds/silver put it in our favour but still a fair amount in front of Russia

Really great to see some coverage of sailing on the Telly

 

However today was hilarous - no sailing due to lack of any wind on the inshore course

 

Admin people decided to send the Women's single Handers (Laser Radials) out - basically on the off chance that SOME wind might arrive

 

10 mins after they arrive on the course - all sailing canceled for the day due to HIGH winds

 

 

 

 

Still - love watching sailing - although I haven't been sailing properly for years

GB finish second in the medal table.

 

 

GB also beat the total number of medals won at London 2012. Coming to Rio GB had a target of 48 medals. Now the expectation (hope?) for Tokyo 2020 is an even better performance.

Back home and hoping for a summary programme to catch up on what caused the results!

 

I'm looking forward to the Paralympics now... as if BBCSPOTY isn't going to be difficult already!

I saw OUTRAGED news headlines from the Express & Mail (no surprise there then!) about this yesterday

In fairness - of course the EU would win - they would have the majority of competitors in many events as a real country is restricted to a small number in each event

6 months. That's how long it took for Rio's Olympic venues to fall into disrepair. It looks like Rio didn't learn any lesson from Athens, Beijing and Sochi, cities which built a great number of sport venues and facilities to host the Olympic Games without having any solid plans about the future...
