Pointing to our Linux Moodle Server

Hello All

 

We have a CC3 network so can Easylink in to our network.

 

We have Moodle from school which is sitting nicely on a Linux Server.

 

However, we cannot link to Moodle from home, which would be one of the major reasons for having it.

 

Preferably, how do I get info to give to the NM so that he can point the Moodle server to the Web Sever so that we can see Moodle from home via our website?

 

Alaternatively, can we use Easylink to do link to Moodle?

 

Otherwise, is it sensible, after having got someone to bulid the linux server, to go to a hosted service afterall? Surely a lot of the functionality/performance is lost when hosting?

You should speak to your ISP and ask them to forward port 80 (or another port if you currently host your website or another website in school) to the IP address of the moodle server. Depending on your schools ISP this will either be done straight away or be prepared to fight for it. Then you would use your public IP or domain name if they host it to access your moodle setup.

Just basically sylv3r is saying. You will need a public IP for the server and when you get the public IP configure you DNS settings for your domain name to point at the public IP. So you might have moodle.schoool.com. Then finally configure your router to send traffic from that public IP to your server. Once you have your public IP it can be done in minutes (Excluding time taken for the DNS settings to kick in)

You need to get your ISP to open port 80 and then sort out port forwarding on your router.

 

Once you've done this you can worry about DNS!

Hello all

 

I find your solution to be slightly beyond my understanding technically but will read up on it! I also feel that I can now go to the ISP and ask them why they have not done this - as I am sure that the NM will have done this. However, why does the NM want to keep referring simple probs like this to his VPN solution - which is not complete yet? Surely Moodle needs to be accessed via the website for all to see?

 

Solving this problem would be a huge step forward. Moodle has been sitting on the server, populated since Early September.

A vpn solution would allow access to *any* internal server without specific modifcations being made by the ISP beyond that of the VPN requirements.

You need to make sure that you have a port forwarding rule on your router for port 80 (or whatever port Moodle is running on) to point at the IP address of your Linux Server.

 

Also

 

The web site location in config.php (this is in the root of your Moodle directory) must be adjusted exactly like this:

 

$CFG->wwwroot = "http://".$_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"]."/moodle";

 

 

Moodle will then be accessible by local and remote calls.

 

You'll then be able to access Moodle externally by typing yourdomainname/moodle into your browser and internally servername/moodle
