[sims] Summer Upgrade 2016 - Issues / SOLUS 3 / Blue Screened SIMS Server

I know there are a few threads already on this update, but none specifically about this issue... When the update was being downloaded in SOLUS 3 yesterday the server froze, so I rebooted it as everyone lost access to SIMS, then the server kept blue screening within seconds of getting to the login screen... It hadn't even got to the stage of installing anything, it was literally trying to download...

 

When speaking to an NM from another school last night, he had pretty much the exact same issue, and ended up rebuilding his SIMS server...

 

Did anyone else here have the same issue?

As mentioned last night Rick we had this exact same issue, clicked download on the SIMS & FMS Summer Database Only packages and server crashed, blue screened and rebooted. The server then got stuck in a blue screen reboot loop. Exact same description as yours few seconds at the login screen.

 

Brand new SIMS server rebuilt now.

You guys running AVs on it while doing it? There was a helpdesk note about them (specifically Sophos but guess any) causing bluescreens while downloading sometimes.

Description

Upon clicking to download a new patch or upgrade using solus 3 the server blue screens.

 

WorkAround

It has been found that having Sophos anti-virus enabled on the server has caused such symptoms as the server blue screening

 

Solution

Please disable Sophos antivirus to enable the updates to be downloaded.

As above, Hopefully not an issue it's pasted from SupportNet but it is if any Mods have an issue

Wooah, that's not good. Thankfully ours seemed to work okay (SIMS on Server 2008 R2 virtualised on ESXi 5.5, running SAV). We have full system state backups nightly so would have been manageable - perhaps snapshotting the server right before upgrading would be wise. How have you recovered? I booted up the replica in VSphere rather than doing it in VMWare, so lost a bit of data, though not much thankfully and everyone seems to be organised enough at mine to know exactly what's missing... I'll know what to do differently should it happen again though!

I have 2 school servers doing exactly this. Luckily though the servers do boot back up fine but everytime I attempt to do the download it crashes them. Got a call logged with Capita and done initial advice on deleting packages ect but this has made no difference. I will look at doing it with Anti-virus disabled on the server but it has not been a problem for lots of other schools that all have Sophos installed.

Is this Windows Server 2008 R2? Also, adding an exception to the folder, does that resolve?

Really quite strange as out of 40 schools that all use Sophos these 2 were the only one's to have issues. However know for the next one to disable on access scanning if it has to be done manually.

Thankfully I have on-access scanning disabled for my SIMS server (all the clients do on-access scanning!) - and I had no problems doing the update.

This happened to me last week. I thought I'd have to rebuild the server but started in Safe Mode and disabled the SOLUS services. It booted up fine so I've kept it steady for now until I get some support from the LA.

I also noticed before all this happened that the Full Package had downloaded successfully while the Database Only download came with an Invalid File Signature message. Maybe this has something to do with it?

@WithoutMotive You done the Sophos disable test? Sounds like it worked for everyone else so far. (Assuming you're on Sophos that is!)
