Nintendo today announced the mini-NES, a new $60 machine that will come pre-installed with 30 classic Nintendo games. It’ll also come with an HDMI cable, a power adapter, and what Nintendo is calling an NES Classic Controller, “patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller.”...

I can't help but think Nintendo could easily emulate these games using software, rather than selling a mini NES. Nice idea though, but why they didn't just include the hundreds of games released for it?

 

I also can't help but notice it supports HDMI, yet has awful looking controller ports... why didn't they just use USB, it would have looked far more elegant!?

Any excuse to cash in I suppose, the controller ports are the same as the bottom of the Wii Remote so you can use the controller on the Wii I guess

 

I've still got my Wii and it can currently do a lot of things including this but that is another story

I expect that they are emulating the games using software. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this thing is running an ARM derived CPU and an emulation layer. Maybe a derivative of a 3DS?

What I meant though is this is the sort of thing Nintendo should release to the App/Play Store - Smart phones are plenty powerful.

its the same as the port on the bottom of a wiimote so you can use wii pro controllers or user the nes controller on a wii/wiiu

id rather have a handheld box with virtual console with nes-n64 or even gamecube games accessible or a snes ive barely used a nes so no nostalgia

Nintendo have either been ingenious here or really stupid, hard to tell. I mean what's the point in this? Yeah it looks kinda cool but still pretty pointless in a world where everyone has a computer in their pocket anyway. I wonder if they're targeting hipsters with this, it would sit nicely in a star bucks!

Hackers tweak NAS Classic Edition to play games from other consoles

 

It didn’t take long for people to start tinkering with Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition, which launched in North America in November 2016. Just a few days after its release, the system was modified to run a custom version of Ubuntu, and in January its library was unofficially expanded. Now, the console isn’t even limited to games that were released for the NES.

 

Hackers have been able to force the NES Classic Edition to run RetroArch, a program that can be used to emulate several classic consoles. With the help of RetroArch, a modified NES Classic Edition can run Game Boy, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis games, according to a report from Nintendo Life.

Nintendo has announced it will cease production of the 30-game NES Classic Edition plug-and-play system by the end of the month, even though retailers have been unable to keep the system on store shelves for pretty much the entirety of its six-month run on the market so far.

Given the Switch is selling so well I think the good ship Nintendo is putting some of the lifeboats back into stowage and can then flog Switch users 30 year old games at top dollar.

Now that you mention it, that does sound quite likely.

 

A couple of other theories...

 

1. They're going to issue a new SKU updated to prevent hacking/adding roms.
   
2. Some of the parts they were having a hard time sourcing are no longer available or too costly now so they cancelled the SKU.

When you factor in the manufacturing costs and the retailers/suppliers cut Nintendo probably wasn't actually making a boat load of cash for each $60 console sold. I expect they figured that, as DosBox says, they'd make more money from selling NES games to Switch owners in an upcoming virtual console..

 

I think Nintendo only really ever sold the NES Classic as a pure way of generating hype for the Switch and to draw attention away from the Sony/MS consoles over the 2016 holiday period.

 

I REALLY hope I'm wrong and there's a SNES Classic edition planned though.....

Nintendo to launch SNES mini this year

 

Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer.

 

The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

 

Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.
